Sadly, this beautiful pup named Charlie suffocated in a pet food bag last week, crushing his owner, Sarah. Compassionate Pets Foundation is sharing Charlie's story on Sarah's behalf to help spread awareness: "Today, our hearts are completely broken for Sarah. Her best friend, her oldest boy, her favorite boy, her first rescue dog, her heart dog, Charlie, passed away in a tragic accident at home. We are sharing what happened because as painful as it is, if Charlie's story can prevent this from happening to even one other animal, it needs to be told.

It was a beautiful day yesterday. Sarah's niece opened the back door and let the dogs outside, leaving the door open for them to come and go, something Sarah does all the time, too. What no one realized was that the main door leading into the garage wasn't shut. Charlie made his way into the garage and pulled an already open bag of cat food from a table. The bag was almost empty. It had been cut straight across the top and rolled for storage. He nuzzled it open, he put his head inside to eat the food.
The bag became stuck. And Charlie suffocated. 💔

It was a freak, devastating accident that none of us would have ever imagined happening. Sarah's niece is absolutely heartbroken and blaming herself for not watching the dogs more closely. But Sarah wants it known that this could have happened to either of them. There was no neglect. There was no lack of love. It was an accident a horrible accident.

Please, in Charlie's memory, check your homes, garages, pantries and anywhere your animals may have access to. Pet food bags, chip bags, treat bags and other plastic or foil lined bags can become deadly suffocation hazards no matter the size. Cut them completely open before throwing them away, store food in secure containers, and keep bags somewhere your pets absolutely cannot reach them.
Most of us would never look at a bag of dog or cat food and think it could take our best friend from us. Until it does. And underneath the warning is simply unimaginable heartbreak.

Charlie wasn't "just a dog." He was Sarah's oldest boy. Her favorite boy. Her constant. Her best friend. Her heart dog. There are some dogs who come into our lives and somehow become part of our identity. Charlie was that dog for Sarah. Our girl spends so much of her life trying to bring other people's animals home safely.
Today, we wish more than anything that we could bring hers back home to her. 💔

We love you, Charlie, and we hope over the Rainbow Bridge you are getting all the treats and ear scratches the world has to offer.
And Sarah, all of us at Compassionate Paws are wrapping our arms around you. Please share Charlie's story. You may save another animal's life. 🐾"

Pet suffocation happens daily, and within minutes. No one is ever prepared for the grief and heartache, so we continue to spread
awareness to prevent pet suffocation so no other animals or families have to experience this. Thank you. 😢

So many have asked what they can do for Sarah in this difficult time.

Sarah just wants to help animals and their owners. Compassionate Paws has helped several families with end of life care. We use Beckers Pet Rest for cremations and most times, we handle the vet bill.
We have helped families with food, liter, vet care, crates, etc.

In memory of Charlie please consider donating.

We haven't had time to hold events or fundraisers.

We appriciate everyone who supports us and our Sarah.

We love you, Charlie.

Thank you.

Boardman, OH

There is absolutely NO drone footage of this amazing rescue… because Sarah’s adrenaline was racing and she completely forgot to hit record. 😂🤦🏽‍♀️
And honestly? That’s why we love her.
It’s also why we know she’s never out there for a “photo op.” She doesn’t care about getting the perfect video, the picture, or credit for the “save.”

Ruby escaped from her fenced-in yard.
FOUR DAYS, she was on the run.
Ruby wasn’t making it easy. 😅

The second she saw a person, she BOLTED in the opposite direction. Sarah flew the drone with no luck. We received a solid sighting, set up food stations and cameras… nothing.

Sarah put the drone back up and somehow, through the trees, she spotted Ruby. 🎯

We didn’t have much confidence that Ruby would enter a trap because she’s afraid of tight spaces but she LOVES her nonna Cheri Lynn , so we knew we had to think differently.

Sarah stayed on Ruby from the sky.

Ruby approached the trap… and quickly decided, absolutely not. 😂

Then a neighbor called and told us Ruby had been spotted behind her house near her fenced yard.

Sarah asked if they would leave the gate slightly open.

They did.

Ruby returned to that exact spot and started smelling the food inside the yard.

For 10 very long minutes, everyone waited. And waited. And waited…

Until Ruby finally WALKED THROUGH THE GATE. 🙌🏼❤️

The homeowner rushed home and quietly but quickly closed the gate.

RUBY WAS SECURE!

Meanwhile, while all of this was unfolding from the sky, Sarah jumped into the backseat of “Father Greg” and Cheri Lynn car and yelled:

“DRIVE!” 😂

And Greg PUT THE PEDAL TO THE METAL. 💨💪

After FOUR DAYS Ruby ran right up to Sarah like absolutely nothing had happened. Like Sarah hadn’t just spent four days looking for her. 😅😂

These are the rescues we are so incredibly thankful for. This worked because everyone listened to Sarah.
They didn’t chase her. They didn’t approach her.
They didn’t pressure her.
They let us watch her behavior and make decisions based on what Ruby was telling us.

When a dog goes missing and enters survival mode, owners no longer know their dog best. Thats when we know your dog better than you, with out ever meeting them. That’s why following Sarahs lead is so very important.

Sarah reads these animals and truly can almost always predict their next move.

Sometimes it’s a trap.
Sometimes it’s patience.
Sometimes it’s an open gate.
And apparently sometimes it’s yelling “DRIVE!” from Father Greg’s backseat. 😂

Welcome home, Ruby Roo. 🐾❤️

Another one safely home!

Hi! I'm Sarah Jean, and around here, we believe in compassion over profit, patience over pressure, and never giving up just because an animal is scared. ❤️

That little girl in this picture is me at 7 years old, smiling from ear to ear with two dogs beside me.

Looking at it now, I guess not much has changed. 😆

For those who don't know me personally, I'm one of the people behind Compassionate Paws Foundation Search & Rescue 501c3 nonprofit.

What started as a little girl who really loved animals eventually became more than 25 years of experience in animal behavior, rescue, recovery, and animal welfare. I'm also a former sworn Animal Control Officer in the State of Ohio and actively work alongside law enforcement, county dog pounds, humane agencies, rescues, independent animal advocates, and owners.

But there's more to me than animals. I'm a licensed foster parent through the State of Ohio, I've worked professionally in finance for 11 years, and since 2022, I've been battling cancer , something that has changed my perspective on life and made me appreciate even more the opportunity to do something meaningful with the time I'm given.

Compassionate Paws isn't just about dogs, either. We help all animals. Search and rescue may be a big part of what we do, but we also help with veterinary care, food and supplies, resources, end-of-life support, and simply being there when someone and their animal need someone in their corner.

A huge part of what I do isn't actually for the animal. It's for the terrified person on the other end of the phone.

When you call me scared, emotional, and completely beside yourself, that's when I stay calm. I'll reassure you. I'll tell you we're going to figure out the next step together. I'll probably try to make you laugh, too, because panicking alongside you isn't going to help either of us.

Now, if we're introducing the real Sarah, there are a few disclaimers. 😂

I swear way too much. I joke around constantly. I'll talk to you like you're my friend. I try to find something positive even on the really bad days. I will probably ask you if you want something from Dunkin. I'm extremely direct, and yes... I can absolutely come across as bossy. 😂

But when an animal's safety is on the line, sometimes I need you to trust me. Being direct isn't about being rude or controlling. It's about staying focused when emotions are high and making decisions that give that animal the best chance of getting to safety.

Underneath the sarcasm, swear words, directness, occasional bossiness, career, responsibilities, and everything life has thrown at me, I'm still that same 7-year-old girl in this picture.

I love animals. I love helping people. And I care deeply about what I do.💜

There are happy endings and heartbreaking ones. There are middle-of-the-night calls, muddy clothes, tears, laughter, frustration, exhaustion, and moments I'll remember for the rest of my life.

Somehow, that little girl smiling so big with those two dogs grew up, built a career, became a foster parent, battled cancer, became an Animal Control Officer, and found a way to make helping animals and people a huge part of her life.

I think she'd be pretty proud of that. 🐾❤️

I'm Sarah, a little loud, a little bossy, probably swearing, usually cracking a joke, and always trying to bring some calm into the chaos.

Welcome to Compassionate Paws. We're glad you're here. 💜

NEW update! We’ve filled 70 spots and only have 20 left! Don’t miss your chance to be part of the first annual Animal rescue summit. I will post a list of those in attendance in a future update.

**Magic Words**: These are phrases people use to encourage you to take in animals, even when you're already at capacity. They can include statements or sometimes misleading claims to get you involved.

**Tech**: This refers to advancements in animal rescue equipment and life-saving techniques.

**Euthanasia**: Understanding when and what constitutes the euthanasia process.

**It's Your Job**: People often tell you what your job is and what they expect from you as an animal rescuer, both the positive and negative aspects.

**Everyone's Full**: This is a common refrain; many people are overwhelmed. It's important to discuss where they can go for help.

**Can't Please Everyone**: There will always be someone who doesn’t understand the situation and may criticize you for not being able to help every animal.

**Who Do We Call?**: This is a question everyone in rescue faces, and it brings to light the efforts we are making to find solutions.
