His name was Baron Friedrich von Steuben, was a military man from Prussia. After enlisting at age 17, he became Frederick the Great's personal aide. He played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War, but he's sadly forgotten at large by history. So for the last Wisdom Wednesday of Pride Month, we're going to dive into the life of Baron Fredrich von Steuben.
In the earlier days of his life, it seemed as though he had a promising Prussian military career. Then one day everything changed...he was dismissed. 😲 Why? Later in life, he wrote of an enemy that he believe had a hand in his dismissal.
He hopped from job to job, rejecting Benjamin Franklin's offer of helping the American military, and then being rejected by other militaries after anonymous defamatory letters 📬came into light. After these setbacks, he swiftly accepted Benjamin Franklin's offer.
And when von Steuben came to America, he was welcomed and appreciated for his military knowledge. 🪖 His strict methods and strong battle techniques played an instrumental role in the American win of the Revolutionary War. 🎖️
He was said to have relationships with some of the men he met in America, though nothing can be confirmed without a doubt. While we cannot confirm, there is strong evidence to prove that he was romantically involved with William North, American soldier and politician, as well as an unclear involvement with Benjamin Walker, Continental Army Officer. For instance, he adopted both men, which was a common practice among gay men during this period, as well as all three men living together. 🏠
"Von Steuben may have been one of the early America's most open LBGT figures, but he was hardly the only man whose love of other men was well known. And though he was to have helped save the American army, his contribution is largely forgotten today," - Erin Blakemore, award-winning journalist. 📰
