Hagar, cast out and desperate in the wilderness with her dying child, discovers that God hears the cry of the forgotten, opening her eyes to a well of water and promising a future for her son. Paul declares that through baptism we have died to the old life of fear and sin and been raised to walk in newness of life, united with Christ in both death and resurrection. Jesus sends his disciples out without illusion – the way will be costly and divisive! – yet grounds their courage in the astonishing truth that not one sparrow falls without the Father’s notice, and the hairs of our heads are all counted. We are held by a God of perpetual loving-kindness, and that is enough to proclaim from the housetops.

The collects for the first part of the Season after Pentecost were designed by Summerlee Walter, communications coordinator at the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. During her 15-year career as a communicator in The Episcopal Church, she has helped more than 130 churches and dioceses build and refine their communications strategies and channels, invite their communities in, and spread the Good News.

A collect for Juneteenth:
Holy and righteous God, you created us in your image. Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression. Help us, like those of generations before us, resist the evil of slavery and human bo***ge in any form and any manner of oppression. Help us to use our freedoms to bring justice among people and nations everywhere, to the glory of your Holy name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
-Collect by The Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson, The Diocese of Missouri

What a wonderful day yesterday with a visit from Bishop Jolly! She baptized Jacob and six others were confirmed, received, or reaffirmed. During these rites, the entire congregation participates, promising, with God's help to walk together in faith with the candidates and to embody the love of Christ in the world to all. After the service, Bishop Jolly held a discussion about faith development in community with the congregation and then met with our Vestry. Altogether a hopeful and faith-filled day! Congratulations to Jacob, Katy, Rebecca, Michael K., Michael L., Jaime, and Katherine!
