Pride 365 is our year-round program where we bring monthly events to our community in an effort to build a more supportive, welcoming, and accepting presence year-round. From film screenings to social gatherings to guest speakers at schools, there’s always something happening.
As part of this program, on May 28th, Dr. Anat Shahar, a prominent planetary scientist and the Vice President for Research at the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Earth and Planets Laboratory, spoke with 5th and 6th graders at The Prosper Vally School. She spoke about her journey to becoming a scientist and shared how she uses chemistry and physics to research our galaxy and beyond! Students were particularly thrilled to get to handled pieces of meteorites that formed billions of years ago.
You might be thinking, “That sounds cool but how does that relate to Pride?” Here’s the thing: we all exist in our own little bubbles of reality and it can be easy to get stuck in them. But when we’re exposed to bigger ideas about the world, the universe, and humanity, it can open our minds to realities that are outside of our little bubbles and make space for things we might not have considered. And when you hold a billions of years old rock from outer space in the palm of your hand and consider there is probably intelligent life on other planets, it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch to believe that q***r love is just as normal as straight love (but more fabulous, obviously).
