Hi Tutors,

I hope your week is going well, and you are staying safe and warm amidst this weather! It's starting to feel like Massachusetts from 2015.

🌟 Tutor Shoutout of the Week
A big shoutout to Charles!

Charles has been able to find topics of interest for his learner like soccer or bargain shopping. By doing this he has been able to get his learner to speak more, build their confidence and also connect with them.

I know many learners are shy at first to open up and speak in English but being able to find those topics they are passionate about will help build their confidence!

πŸ“š This Week's Featured Resource
Beginner Lesson: "BBC Learning English: Simple Podcasts"
This resource to get your learner to practice their listening skills. We know how hard it is for learners to practice English outside their tutoring session. Maybe, they can listen to one episode a week or a couple to practice listening and comprehension

Access Here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/real-easy-english

Tutor Tip: Use this as a homework assignment, assign your learner one podcast to listen to at home and then discuss what the podcast was about. Ask them to write down words or phrases they did not understand.

Hi Tutors,

Hope you had a wonderful weekend and are looking forward to the week! Here is another quick guide to the latest resource as well as a celebration of your amazing work!

🌟 Tutor Shoutout of the Week
A big shoutout to Jason!
Jason created a Google Sheet to help their learner translate words/sentences/phrases from English to their native language. The Google Sheet JKason created is separated by tabs or categories such as nouns, verbs, greetings etc. As well as the Google Sheet is able to take the words/phrases and make flash cards for the learner to use to practice.

Amazing job, Jason, for using your personal background to find a creative solution for your learner to practice their English!

Monthly News & Updates Date November 2025 | Issue 3

Thank you Volunteers!!!!

During Thanksgiving and the holiday season, we take time to pause and reflect on what we’re grateful for.

For the past six months, I’ve had the honor of leading English At Large and witnessing the passion, commitment, and generosity of more than 140 volunteers who give their time, their hearts, and their energy to our learners. Every week, you show up with kindness and patience. You change lives in small, powerful ways one conversation, one lesson, one moment of encouragement at a time.

Because of you, adults in our communities are gaining confidence, finding their voices, and building new futures for their families. You make this work possible, and you make EAL a place of welcome and hope.

Thank you for everything you give, and for being the reason we have so much to be grateful for this season.

Ben Echevarria
Executive Director

πŸ’™ Volunteer Conference
On November 12th, we hosted our annual Volunteer Conference. A special thank you to Nic from Project Citizenship for guiding us through the pathway to citizenship; to Katy, Luz, and Sandy from the Right Question Institute for showing us how learners and tutors can use better questions to build informal assessments; and to EAL volunteer and ESOL professional Tia, who shared practical strategies for teaching sentence structure. Here are some photos from the event.

What are you Grateful for?

I want to thank for coming to our Volunteer Conference and teaching your techniques on forming good questions.
