The initial November 9th deadline for the next round of Social Capital Inc.’'s Youth Grant Pitch Contest is coming up!

This program provides teams of teens with mentoring as they develop their own community impact projects, which they will present in April for a chance to receive funding for implementation.

Applications received by the initial deadline will receive priority consideration to be accepted into the program.

All high school aged youth from Greater Boston are invited to apply and selected youth teams will have the opportunity to receive:

*Up to $2,000 in grant funding to implement their community project idea
*Mentorship from two volunteer Pitch Coaches
*Development of Career Skills such as public speaking, project management and team collaboration

Youth teams' social connection projects can address a range of pressing community needs that fall under one of three impact tracks:

*Bridge-building
*Mental Health
*STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, Math)

Thanks to all who came to our first SCI Network Connection event of the season! We greatly appreciate the support! It was very interesting to hear everyone's story of how mentors have made a difference in our lives, and the importance of mentoring others.

That naturally led to mentioning our current opportunity to sign-up as a volunteer Pitch Coach for our upcoming SCI Youth Grant Pitch Contest in 2027!

A very big thank you to long-time SCI supporter Beth Llewellyn Lavoie & her husband Dave Lavoie, for opening your home and inviting friends to this event. Wonderful hosts and champions for the SCI Social Capital Inc. cause!

We'll be offering programs like this roughly once a month, a combination of home-based events like this along with restaurants, community spaces and a very interesting venue, be sure to stay tuned!

The October 29th benefit concert features Jim Mayer, longtime member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Re**er Band, and his band Tropical Friends!

Every ticket donation will be matched, doubling the support for the nonprofit selected by each attendee! Thanks to generous sponsors covering the event costs, the full $30 ticket donation goes to the participating nonprofits. With the new match, each ticket generates $60 for SCI if selected as the beneficiary!

The concert takes place this Thursday, October 29, in Somerville, with opportunities to connect with SCI and other participating nonprofits before and after the show.

Today we want to highlight one of our youth teams from SCI’s 2026 Youth Grant Pitch Contest, which recently held one of the big events supported by their Pitch Contest grant.

Con Manos Unidas We Change hosted their 2nd annual resource fair recently in East Boston. The event brought together both community organizations and members to learn about the different resources available to them in both English and Spanish.

The team recognized that while there was an abundance of resources in their community, the resources weren’t easily accessible and set out to bridge the gap. With the support of their Pitch Contest grant, Con Manos Unidas We Change was able to not only host another successful resource fair but extend their project to further aid their community. They plan to host workshops in October providing financial literacy workshops and workshops providing aid in education opportunities.

The event had live music and SCI Program Manager Nicole Osborne described, “The youth organizers created a space where people can feel comfortable accessing resources.”

Congratulations to the Con Manos Unidas We Change team on being bridge-builders within their community! Thank you to the Boston Bridges Initiative for supporting bridge-building projects like this!

This project is one example of the incredible work of our youth teams from the Youth Grant Pitch Contest.

The Volunteer Coaching application for the 2027 SCI Youth Grant Pitch Contest is officially open!

SCI is actively recruiting 30 Pitch Coaches as volunteers to mentor youth teams through a series of 8 weekly, 1-hour coaching sessions and a rehearsal from February through April 2027. Pitch Coaches will mentor youth teams in developing and refining their pitch, slide deck, and budget proposal.

“I was able to build stronger connections with my team of youth by collaborating, listening to their ideas, and supporting them through the process,” a 2026 Pitch Coach explained. “It was rewarding to see their excitement and growth.”

Following our event last Friday featuring former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy as part of our outreach partnership with Phillips Brooks House Association’s (PBHA) 20th annual Robert Coles “Call of Service” Lecture & Award, we’re looking back at one of our previous connections with him!

In 2023, Dr. Murthy held a public health conversation with US Senator Ed Markey about the post-pandemic youth mental health crisis, loneliness, and the risks of excessive social media use among adolescents.

Two of our LET interns at the time, Kafui Kemeh and Valery Verdier, attended the conversation. As the only two young people in the room, they had a chance to share their opinions with the speakers and media. Kafui agreed with Dr Murthy’s point that social media has its benefits ”Social media can be very helpful but then it can also make us feel worse.”

From 2023 to 2026 it’s incredible to see how the connections we cultivate continue to grow!

SCI is excited to be one of the featured nonprofits at the Jim Mayer Benefit Concert and Nonprofit Showcase, taking place on October 29th at 6pm in Somerville!

🎶Jimmy Buffett fans, take note! Jim Mayer spent decades performing as a member of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Re**er Band. He’ll be joined by his band Tropical Friends for an evening featuring many Buffett favorites, along with plenty of laid-back, tropical-vibes music.

🤝Attendees will also have the chance to mingle with SCI and the other participating nonprofits before and after the show, making it as much a chance to connect with community organizations as it is a great night of music.

💚Thanks to the generosity of the Margaret Stewart Lindsay Foundation, the Stifler Family Foundation, and the Social Innovation Forum, 100% of proceeds from the event go directly to the participating nonprofits, including SCI!

The Youth Team application for the 2027 SCI Youth Grant Pitch Contest is officially open!

SCI is seeking 15 youth teams with students in grades 9-12 from Greater Boston to apply for our annual program. The Youth Grant Pitch Contest provides youth with access to adult mentorship, up to $2,000 in financial support, and network-building opportunities for their own social connection impact projects, while bridging communities across Greater Boston.
