Healthcare....Forward‑Party‑Aligned, Common Sense, Practical

This week I want to speak directly about health care in our district and why I’m concerned about the New York Health Care Act (NYHA).

The NYHA is estimated to cost around $300 billion per year, while New York’s entire state budget is about $350 billion. Some candidates are promoting this plan without offering any realistic way to pay for it...other than dramatic tax increases on already overburdened taxpayers. That’s not sustainable, and it’s not honest budgeting.

At the same time, we’re facing real local consequences. Newark‑Wayne Hospital is ending its maternity services, leaving families in our rural communities with fewer options for safe, accessible care and who knows what the longer term plan is for the hospital remaining care options.

As a representative, my priority is to retain and improve health‑care access for everyone...not push a plan that risks destabilizing the entire state budget.

We need practical solutions. That means holding profit‑driven health‑care corporations accountable, negotiating to protect rural services, and ensuring they meet their responsibility to the communities they serve. Rural hospitals should not be treated as expendable.

From a Forward‑Party perspective, the more realistic path to universal care is through the federal government, not a single state. Only the federal government has the scale and funding mechanisms to implement universal health care without forcing states to raise taxes to historic levels.

New Yorkers deserve better access to care...and they deserve honest math, responsible budgeting, and real accountability.

That’s the approach I’m committed to bringing to Assembly District 130.

WHY ME: Independent "Common Sense" Forward Party

My name is Joseph Lamanna. I am a retired engineering manager with 34 years of experience at Chrysler and hold degrees in engineering, political science, and a master’s in business administration. After living in Syracuse and later Michigan for my career, I now reside in Williamson, Wayne County, New York. I currently serve on the Williamson Planning Board, Zoning Board, and Assessment Review Board, and I volunteer as a firefighter.

I am seeking election to the New York State Assembly for District 130 because the district has experienced significant neglect. Issues such as food and medical deserts, the closure of the birthing center at Newark Hospital, inadequate housing, limited employment opportunities, and financial stagnation have hindered the region’s development. I am committed to addressing these challenges through practical, community‑centered solutions.

I believe that both the Democratic and Republican party establishments function as corporate entities that prioritize party loyalty and platform adherence over the needs of constituents. I do not subscribe to this model. My focus is on representing the district based on its actual needs rather than the ideological agendas of partisan leadership or the extremes of either political wing. My platform is grounded in problem‑solving for all residents, not in appeasing party directives.

Another major reason I chose to run for office comes from my years of experience as a union leader with the UAW. I served as a steward, a committeeman, and ultimately the president of my local, where I negotiated collective bargaining agreements both locally and nationally. That work taught me how to advocate for people, how to listen, how to build consensus, and how to fight for fair treatment and real solutions. Those experiences shaped my belief that public office should operate the same way — grounded in accountability, transparency, and respect for the people you represent.

In 2023, I ran for Williamson Town Supervisor and received 47% of the vote, losing by 106 votes in a town that had not fielded a Democratic candidate in more than three decades. In the current election cycle, I have been endorsed by the Wayne County and Monroe County Democratic Committees, multiple trade unions, the Working Families Party, and Planned Parenthood. I also secured the Independent “Common Sense” ballot line. Although I narrowly lost the Democratic primary by 47 votes, I continue my campaign as an independent candidate. The delayed delivery of more than 12,000 mailers...now under investigation by the USPS Inspector General...significantly affected the primary outcome.

I align with the Forward Party’s emphasis on practical governance, constructive dialogue, and community‑driven representation. I joined the Forward Party because I believe in moving beyond partisan polarization and focusing on effective, evidence‑based solutions for the people of District 130.

AFFORDABILITY...A Crisis We Can’t Ignore!

Affordability is one of the most pressing challenges facing families in our region. Rising housing costs, higher utility bills, transportation expenses, and weekly grocery bills that seem to climb without warning have created real strain for people who are working hard just to stay afloat. Many residents are making difficult choices...cutting back on essentials, delaying repairs, or stretching paychecks in ways that simply aren’t sustainable.

My lengthy background in collective bargaining has shaped how I understand and approach these challenges. In that work, I’ve spent years sitting across the table from people with very different priorities, finding shared interests, and negotiating outcomes that respect everyone involved. It requires patience, listening, and a willingness to look beyond rigid positions to find practical solutions.

As an Independent under the party line called "Common Sense", I value the flexibility to examine issues without being confined to partisan expectations. That independence allows me to focus on the real‑world pressures residents face...whether it’s the cost of heating a home in the winter, the price of fuel for commuting, or the struggle to keep a small business profitable when expenses rise faster than revenue. I believe affordability demands cooperation, creativity, and a willingness to consider ideas from all sides.

I’ve been at the Wayne County Fair all week, listening to concerns and introducing myself to folks from across Assembly District 130. The conversations have been honest and direct...people are hurting. No one is talking about party labels. They’re talking about the cost of living, healthcare, jobs and the economy, public safety, and the everyday challenges affecting their families.

The fringe issues aren’t what people are focused on. They’re focused on real life.

That’s why I’m running as an Independent. I don’t have to follow a party structure. I can focus on what matters to Upstate folks...all folks...not just a small group within a party. My goal is to bring people together and fight for the issues that actually impact our communities.

I’ll be walking in the Wayne County Fair parade this Saturday at 4:00 pm. Keep an eye out...I’ll be handing out literature and would love to say hello.

I want to share a bit about why I’m running and what guides me. My approach has always been rooted in moderation, practicality, and “common sense.” I believe in listening first, working across divides, and focusing on solutions that serve everyone in Assembly District 130. My platform, values, and commitment to non‑partisan representation have not changed...they remain the foundation of this grassroots effort.

This campaign continues because of the people who believe in a community‑first approach not the partisan divide. It truly takes contributions from residents to keep a grassroots effort moving forward, to stay connected, and to make sure every voice in the district has a place in the conversation.

I’ll be there throughout the week and welcome anyone who would like to have a conversation about Assembly District 130, local issues, and my role as an Independent candidate.
