Health literacy helps Wilkes Literacy’s students and their families build skills for healthy living.

Health Literacy continues to be a program that makes a big impact in the life of Wilkes Literacy’s students. Each week, intermediate and advanced students receive a lesson on a health topic that builds vocabulary and creates a discussion about healthy living. Last week’s discussion was about heart health.

We are so grateful for Anna!

We are so grateful for Anna!

Today we celebrate Wilkes Literacy volunteer tutor and Board member Anna Pyke. Anna works every week with her student, a single mother trying to make a better life for herself and her children. Anna has been a cheerleader and excellent resource for her student. My favorite Anna moment? When Anna’s student was brave enough to start her own business, Anna spent one tutoring session going over business-savvy questions her student should know (because Anna is a smart businesswoman herself). Wilkes Literacy is grateful for Anna and her dedicated service!

Thank you, Dr. McMahan!

We are all so grateful for his service and leadership. He is making a tremendous impact in the life of his student every week!

We’re thankful for our volunteers!

We’re thankful for our volunteers!

Our volunteers are the best! Today we celebrate Melanie Parrish, Wilkes Literacy Board Member and volunteer tutor. Melanie is willing to work with Wilkes Literacy’s students that have had the most challenges learning to read. Her newest student is a kind man in his 70s who has tried several times to learn to read. He’s willing to give it one more try, and we are here to work alongside him. Melanie is an absolute wonder, and her determination is inspiring. Wilkes Literacy is thankful for Melanie and all our volunteers.
