From consolidating local sporting leagues to expanding recreational activities, the Anthony Wayne Youth Foundation has become a powerhouse of a nonprofit organization over the past 20 years.
βTo see what itβs grown into today is beyond what our vision was,β said AWYF Founder Todd Frendt. βIt warms my heart.β
Youth participants can choose from 17 activities, from soccer and baseball to fishing and snowboarding.
βOur job is to get as many kids out and doing some sort of physical activity as possible β whether itβs travel or rec,β said executive director Taylor Kervin.
While the goal of the AWYF is not to serve as a feeder to high school sports, thatβs certainly been a byproduct. Lori Williams, Anthony Wayne High School girlsβ soccer coach, believes the youth programs have been pivotal in shaping the success of the high school program.
βThe benefits of these programs extend far beyond just technical skills," she said. "By the time our players reach high school, they come equipped with years of coaching, an understanding of the game, and, perhaps more importantly, strong connections with teammates.β
