✊🏿🏡 Celebrate Freedom, Respect the Struggle

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth while acknowledging the long struggle for freedom, equality, and justice that continues to shape our nation.

In order to build the future, we need to accept the past and know our history.

Juneteenth—short for "June Nineteenth"—commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the last enslaved Black Americans were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. There were an estimated 250,000 people still living under slavery in Texas, as slave owners ignored the proclamation and suppressed news of it.

Juneteenth stands as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the work required to build a more equitable society, work that we can all be a part of.

At Habitat Bergen we’ll continue to work towards building opportunity and equality across Bergen County. As we honor Juneteenth, we reflect on the importance of expanding access to housing, strengthening communities, and creating pathways to a brighter future.

Today, we celebrate freedom, respect the struggle, and recommit ourselves to building communities where every family has the opportunity to thrive.

🎓🏡 Students Making a Difference

We were thrilled to welcome Andrew, faculty advisor for Habitat Campus Chapter at Bergen Catholic High School, who recently stopped by to present a generous fundraising check on behalf of the students.

Throughout the school year, Bergen Catholic students worked hard to raise funds in support of Habitat Bergen and our mission of creating affordable homeownership opportunities for families in our community. Their commitment demonstrates the power of young people coming together to make a meaningful impact. 💙

We're excited to continue growing our partnership with Bergen Catholic's Habitat Campus Chapter in the coming school year through collaborative advocacy, education, and fundraising efforts that help raise awareness of the affordability crisis and inspire action across Bergen County.

🔨💙 We Build Community: Camaraderie & Commitment with the Greyheads 💙🔨

Earlier this spring, as we kicked off the final stretch of our Oradell home build, we welcomed our incredible Greyheads for a special luncheon at the build site.

More than just a meal, it was an opportunity to celebrate the friendships, dedication, and shared purpose that have helped carry this project forward from the very beginning. The Greyheads are a critical force behind Habitat Bergen's success—bringing experience, craftsmanship, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. 🏡

During the event, we recognized the volunteers who contributed the most hours to the Oradell build, acknowledging the remarkable time and effort they invested in helping make affordable homeownership possible for a future family.

Every nail driven, wall framed, and problem solved reflects the spirit of this extraordinary group. Their commitment extends far beyond construction—they help build community, strengthen our mission, and inspire everyone around them.

Thank you to all of our Greyheads for the countless hours, the camaraderie, and the passion you bring to Habitat Bergen. We couldn't do this work without you.

☀️🔨 Summer Team Build Season is Almost Here! 🌿🏡

As the weather warms up, we're getting ready to take our team build workshops outdoors once again!

Throughout the summer, corporate teams, community groups, and volunteers will come together to build picnic tables, planter benches, and other custom items that will be donated to organizations serving Bergen County—including senior centers, VFW posts, nature centers, and other community spaces. 🌱

There’s something special about building outdoors on a summer day—working side by side, enjoying the fresh air, and creating something that will benefit others long after the last screw is turned. ☀️🤝

Every project is an opportunity to strengthen our community, support local organizations, and put teamwork into action. We can't wait to see what this year's teams will build together!

🏡 National Homeownership Month this June 🏡

Homeownership remains one of the most powerful pathways to stability, opportunity, and long-term financial security. Yet for too many families, that path is becoming increasingly difficult to reach.

As housing costs continue to rise, the affordability crisis is putting homeownership further out of reach for working families in Bergen County and across the nation. Addressing this challenge will require more than a single solution—it will take collaboration, innovation, and policies that expand access to affordable homes and create opportunities for future homeowners.

We were excited to recently welcome Kurt Breitenstein of Valley Bank to the Bergen ReStore! Kurt has officially rejoined the Habitat Bergen Board of Directors after previously serving on the board, and we’re thrilled to have his leadership and support back as part of our mission.

Valley Bank has continued to be a strong community partner, including serving as a sponsor for our recent Women Build initiative last month. Partnerships like these help create momentum toward expanding affordable housing opportunities for families across Bergen County. 💙

🔨🌱 SeaCube Breezes through the Workshop

We were excited to welcome another team from SeaCube to the Habitat Bergen workshop for a day of hands-on impact!

With the wind to their backs, they sailed through a very productive workshop session—building birdhouses and assembling furniture that will support our mission and serve our community.

Every project completed in the workshop helps fuel our work to create strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. 💙
