SALAD Airway Simulation in Action — Day 2 Continues!

The FDNY Search & Rescue Field Medicine Symposium rolls into Day 2, and participants are getting hands-on with one of the most realistic airway challenges in modern simulation training.

What’s SALAD?
No… not lunch. 🥗
SALAD = Suction Assisted Laryngoscopy and Airway Decontamination — an advanced airway management technique designed to help providers manage a soiled or contaminated airway, such as when a patient is actively vomiting, bleeding, or has copious secretions that make visualization and intubation extremely difficult. This technique emphasizes continuous suction, airway decontamination, and rapid airway control in some of the most challenging real-world scenarios.

We’re proud to share that TILI is the first organization in the nation to receive the new Laerdal Advanced Airway Solution System, reinforcing our commitment to delivering cutting-edge, high-impact simulation education. Our leadership team helped the Laerdal product development engineers with feedback and input over the last two years to bring this exceptional new product to market.

At TILI, we continuously invest in the latest technologies to ensure our learners train the way they may actually have to perform — under pressure, in complex environments, and when seconds matter.

Day 2 of the NERS SimWars competition brought the intensity up a level with a hands-on trauma scenario that challenged both clinical skill and teamwork under pressure.

Participants were faced with a high-acuity patient simulation, requiring rapid assessment, decisive interventions, and strong communication. Teams worked through assessments, managing airway, bleeding control, and patient stabilization while coordinating roles in real time. The scenario pushed everyone to think critically, prioritize effectively, and operate as a cohesive unit—mirroring the demands of real-world trauma response.

The use of high-fidelity simulation equipment added realism, allowing teams to practice life-saving techniques in a controlled but dynamic environment. Observers and facilitators provided feedback throughout, reinforcing best practices and highlighting opportunities for improvement.

Beyond the technical skills, today emphasized leadership, situational awareness, and adaptability—key components of successful emergency response. Another strong showing from all teams as the competition wrapped up.

Another strong day for the Training, Innovation & Leadership Institute (TILI) at the New England Regional Emergency Nurses Symposium (NERS) in Newport, RI!

We were proud to sponsor today’s SIMWARS competition along with the Stop the Bleed (STB) and CPR Challenges—bringing high-quality, hands-on training experiences to emergency care professionals from across the region. From simulation to skills stations, the energy and engagement were outstanding.

Our exhibit table was busy all day connecting with partners, sharing our capabilities, and highlighting how TILI is advancing training, innovation, and leadership in healthcare and public safety.

This is what it’s all about—pushing the standard forward and strengthening the system together.
