WMASS is a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of pets through rescue, education, and advocacy. Volunteers are always needed! Happy Tails!

We work to place homeless animals in loving homes, promote humane treatment, and foster a deeper appreciation of the human-animal bond. The West Milford Animal Shelter Society, Inc. (WMASS) is a 100% volunteer organization and IRS recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was formed in 1976 out of a desperate need to establish an adoption program at the West Milford Animal Shelter, a municipal facility. Many cats and dogs arrive annually, seeking shelter, love, attention, and veterinary care from the WMASS. The WMASS also shelters other domestic animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas, and birds, as well as injured or orphaned, young wildlife. At any point in time, the shelter houses between 50-100 cats/kittens and about 12 dogs. Just a few hours a week can make a huge difference in the lives of these homeless animals. Volunteers donate a lot of time and effort. It’s hard work...but the rewards of getting a lot of bright eyes, love and happy tails make it all worthwhile. The shelter is open Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Wednesday evening 7:30 - 9:00 pm and Saturday/Sunday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. They can be reached at 973-728-2859.

These two buns were brought in to us through no fault of their own. They were still babies themselves, and their lives were tossed upside down in a few hours' time. Thankfully, through all hardship, they still had each other to lean on.

As they waited for their forever home, we kept them in the same cage for company. They cuddled every morning as they waited for their mini salads and did binkies (leaps of joy) in their playpen together. One weekend, a nice couple came to visit, and they fell in love with them both.

Lou and Lucia... ADOPTED!

Put your paws together for Lou and Lucia, everyone! Their new mother says they have settled in wonderfully.

Trick-or-Treat!

All of our kitties picked Churu as their treat of choice for Halloween. They were very pleased with their snacks and the petting they received from our volunteers today.

We have many feline friends hoping to find their forever homes this fall. Come visit them soon!

an awesome senior dog, Mason, here… Australian Shepherd. This 10 year-old sweet boy was recently released to us. Unfortunate, sad situation for his owner…
Mason would be fine in a home with children 10+ age. Meet and great required if you have a dog. We’re open this lovely Halloween day from 10AM to 3PM. Same hours for Sunday!

Our Volunteer, Angie, spends time with him and has this to say:

👉Playful:
He loves a game of fetch. He’ll bring you the ball to throw, then celebrate every catch with victory laps around the yard, legs bouncing with pure joy. It’s impossible not to smile watching him. He wants you involved even during playtime and he’s always up for a round of tug. When he’s out in the kennels, he races back and forth with his neighbor Jasper (our white deaf pitty) until they both run out of gas.

👉Affectionate:
When he isn’t being a goofy puppy, he wants to relax and lean his whole body into you. He’s the biggest mush, and I love kissing his forehead and face.

👉Smart:
I love watching him work through problems. When his ball gets stuck somewhere he can’t reach, the look of determination on his face as he figures it out is both hilarious and impressive. You may need to lend a paw now and then but I suspect he does it on purpose to keep you engaged.

👉Personality:
He’s naturally wary of new people, as is typical of his breed. Once you’re in his inner circle, though, you become his whole world and he’ll be fiercely loyal and protective of you. With a proper introduction, he’s more than capable of welcoming new people in.

He needs someone who has his back and won’t give up on him. In return, his loyalty and love will be the envy of everyone you know.

What goes on in the shelters dog laundry room besides, cleaning, feeding, walking our pups? Well, we have to administer care, sometimes in the form of medications and baths! Humphrey may not have been thrilled with his meds, but our dedicated crew won't give up on him! Jasper, on the other hand, reveled in his spa day!

If you ever meet a shelter volunteer, besides thanking them for their selfless dedication, remember that they're always prepared with p**p bags and treats in their pocket... a symbol of their unwavering commitment to making a difference!

Beauty's Story that we know so far:
♥She's a petite 6 y/o happy pup, approx. 35lbs
♥This girl needs to be your only pet. She was released to us b/c she wasn't able to live peacefully with the other dog when it came to food/toys. We have adopted many pups like this successfully into loving homes. We hope there are many families out there looking for just one happy - loving dog.
💕She's great out walking, hiking, etc. with other dogs
💓Can be adopted to a family with kids 12+ years old

So, she went to see our Vet yesterday and this is from Volunteer Pete who took her there:
"Beauty (alias Batgirl... I call her that because of the batman collar she had on when released to us), was a good girl at the Vet's office... She jumped right into the back of my car, couldn't wait! I put her in a harness for the ride to the vet; she was incredibly perfect. Everyone at the office loved her!"
