On any given Sunday, I have three sermons. The first is the sermon manuscript I prepared during the week. The second is the sermon I actually preach which may differ from the manuscript. And the third sis the sermon I wish I would have preached. In reflection there are always things I wish I would have said or said differently. I wish I could add an addendum, a post script to my sermon. The preacher to the Hebrews sermon ends with the call to make a decision in chapter 12. It's either Mt Sinai and the fear of judgment, or Most Zion and the blessings of heaven. Chapter 13 is an addendum, a post script of important injunctions, parting words. The first five revolve around love. Our first love is brotherly love, then love of strangers, love for the persecuted Christian who may be imprisoned for their faith, love for our spouses by protecting the purity of ur marriage relationships, and then finally a love for God over money or material possessions. Learning to be content with what God has given to us rather than coveting what others might have. We can do so because God has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. And He has promised to be our present help in times of trouble. So, we are to love God above all else! The post script of love is really a script for life!

God wants us to be victors, not victims, to soar and not sink, to overcome and not be overwhelmed! Whatever challenges or problems you might be facing, the difference between being a victor or victim is how we respond to the challenges we are facing. This sermon looks at one of the most familiar Old Testament stories: David and Goliath. The Challenge that Israel was facing was Goliath, a Philistine fighter who was large, loud, and life-threatening. Saul and his army were the cowards who responded with fear and with passivity, hoping that their problem (Goliath) would go away. But he didn't. The young shepherd boy, David responded with courage and faith. Faith sees the challenges as God's problem. The conflict was not between Goliath and Israel, but between Goliath and the armies of the Living God. Faith also meets the challenges armed with the promises of God. God had promised victory over Israel's enemies. The battle belongs to the Lord! Faith also faces the challenges convinced of God's faithfulness! God n the past had delivered David from the paw of the lion and the bear! David believed that God would deliver him from the "paw" of this Philistine! Believing the problem was God's, armed with the promise of God, and convinced of God's faithfulness, the faith that conquers is a faith of action! David courageously fought and killed the giant! God brought about the victory as a witness to the watching world and as encouragement to others to trust God.

In 1925, Mr Charles Trout started the East Berlin Nondenominational Sunday School, believing that every community needed to hear God's Word. In 1958, the Sunday School called their first pastor, Mr. Alexander Mattern and took steps to become the East Berlin Community Church. On Sunday, we celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the Sunday School and Church. With the uncertainty surrounding the future of the church with Pastor's retirement at the end of the year, we chose today to focus on the faithfulness of God! After recounting the history of the church we looked at Psalm 89, the contemplation of Ethan who lived in uncertain times. He too chose to celebrate God's faithfulness which is celebrated in heaven and seen in God's faithfulness to David. From what we learned about God's faithful character, the sermon ends with a few examples of God's faithfulness to the church family at EBCC. The fact that the church still exists is a testament to the faithfulness of our God!

We are currently in the midst of another election cycle. Candidates on both sides are painting the other side unfit for public office. But in a few weeks, it will be decision time! We must choose one or the other, and the live with the consequences of our choice. The speaker to the Hebrews has been setting forth his case for the superiority of Jesus Christ as the Great High Priest and the mediator of the New Covenant. Some of his listeners were still worshiping under the old Mosaic covenant bringing their sacrifices to the priests and relying upon keeping the Law for their salvation. They had yet to embrace Jesus Christ as their Messiah-Savior and the New Covenant relationship with God. The preacher concludes his argument by setting forth the two choices they had. It is either Mount Sinai and the fear of the Law, or Mount Zion and the grace of the Gospel. Mount Sinai is associated with fear, trembling, the unapproachable God whereas Mount Zion is associated with celebration, with joy in the presence of God. In painting Mount Zion as the better option the preacher presents seven blessings waiting for us in heaven. He concludes with the invitation, 'Do not refuse Him who is speaking." Listen to God's gracious call for salvation! Because God's judgment is coming! One day this present universe will be shaken and destroyed, but only God's kingdom will remain! It cannot be shaken! The kingdom of heaven is eternal! And it is important that one's name is on the 'roll' or heaven's registry. For only those whose names are recorded in the Lamb's book of life will be admitted to the heavenly kingdom! Our names are added when we believe the gospel! Decision time!

Every professional sports team has team rules which are part of their training program. The Christian life is a long-distance marathon! As such God has a training program which includes trials, afflictions, hardships. There is no gain without pain! But in God's training program there are certain things we need to do. We need to concentrate on fixing our eyes on Jesus who is the source of our strength, and on right living so as to help weak, struggling Christians on their race. We need to pursue peace with all people and holiness as a positive witness to a watching world! And then we need to be spiritually vigilant, looking our for those in danger of falling short of God's grace. Looking out for those who have a root of bitterness and for the sexually immoral. Looking out too for those who have shallow selfishness, who have no reverence for the things which are sacred. We need to not only look out and care for others, but also examine ourselves to be sure we are living up to God's training rules!

All of us experience hardships, trials, afflictions in life! Why does God allow His children to suffer? He does so as a means of disciplining us. As believers we often suffer painful consequences for our sins, but we will never experience God's judgment for them as our sins were paid in full by Christ at the cross. But God disciplines us as corrective punishment for our sins! He seeks to correct bad behavior and to draw us close to Himself! God at times disciplines us to prevent us from danger and sin. He also disciplines by educating us as to His greatness and our need to depend on Him! God's discipline proves God's love for us and that we are legitimate children of God! For whom the Lord loves, He chastens! And He does so that we might experience fullness of life and holiness of character! His aim is not to make us happy, as discipline can be painful, but rather that we might be holy!

The Christian life is like a race. Not a 100 yard dash, but rather a long distance marathon! The preacher in his sermon to the Hebrews seeks to encourage them to finish the race and to finish well. To run with endurance the race of life. To do so demands perseverance, steady determination to keep going. It also demands a determination to win. Those motivating us in this race are the "cloud of witnesses", those who by faith have run their races. To run the race with endurance we need to lay aside every weight-- those things that in themselves are not bad but the weigh us down and seek to control our lives-- and the sin, the pesky sin that so easily trips us. We run the race fixing our eyes on Jesus, who is both the author and the finisher of our faith! He showed us how to live by faith in complete obedience to His Father. His motivation was the joy that was set before Him, the prospect of once again sitting next to His Father's throne. And so, as we fix our eyes on Jesus, let us not become weary and discouraged in our souls as we run our race. May we not only finish, but finish well.

Our human tendency is to put certain successful, prominent people up on pedestals, only to discover that they are flawed individuals. Those who listed in the "Saints Hall of Faith" in Hebrews 11 were spiritually flawed. All of them were sinners in need of a Savior! In this message entitled the "Hodge Podge" of Faith, we consider the rest of those listed in Hebrews 11, both the individuals and their exploits of faith. Some of them were example of Triumphant Faith when God responds positively to their impossible situations and brings about their deliverance. Some listed we might not include in our list of faithful men and women. They are not included because of their weaknesses, but because of their faith in God. God honors faith. But some were also examples of Struggling Faith. Those times when God chooses not to deliver from their dire situations or problems but instead He gives power to see His people through their problems. All of the Old Testament saints, whether triumphant or suffering, received a good report card from God! They were honored for their faith. But what they did not receive was the promise, the ultimate promise of the Redeemer and salvation through Him. God has provided for us something better, that being the ultimate fulfillment of the promise in the person of Jesus Christ!

Life is made up of decisions. Some are simple and unimportant, whereas others are extremely important and consequential. The course and quality of our lives is determined more by our choices than by our circumstances. By faith, Abel chose God's way by offering an acceptable sacrifice. Enoch chose God's way and walked in fellowship with the Lord. Noah chose to obey God, build the ark, and save his family. Abraham chose God's way by believing Him, living as a pilgrim, patiently waiting on God to possess the promised land. All them chose to do so by faith! Moses also lived by faith. And his story begins with his parent's faith. By faith, they chose to disobey Pharaoh's orders and kept Moses aline. Believing that God had a plan for Moses' life, and perhaps he was the promised deliverer, they instilled in Moses God's plan for Israel and for Moses. Being raised as the prince of Egypt, Moses never lost sight of who he was or God's plan for his life. Bu faith, he chose to reject the world's prestige, refusing to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. By faith, he chose to suffer pain over sinful pleasures. He could have lived a comfortable life in Egypt but instead he chose to identify with oppressed brethren. By faith Moses chose true riches over world wealth. And by faith, Moses chose to face his fears, to forsake all in order to follow God's plan for His life. He had faced his fears, and armed with the presence, power, and promises of God. he fearlessly stood in Pharaoh's face demanding the unconditional release of God's people. He did so by faith!

All of us live by a combination of faith plus sight. We plan our days but submit our plans to the Father. But sometimes God asks os us to do things that goes against common convention, like Noah. Noah built a boat by faith. Abel teaches us what it means to worship God; Enoch what it means to walk with God; And Noah what it means to obey God. But it is Abraham who puts all the pieces together, and teaches us what is involved in living by faith. Living by faith is a pilgrimage. It involves patience as we wait on God to fulfill His promises. When we live by faith we experience the power of God as He does the impossible for us. But when we live by faith our faith is also tested to prove the genuineness of is. Abraham was tested when he offered up his son, Isaac. And finally, those who live by faith have an eternal perspective on life. This world is not our home. We are sojourners, pilgrims. But our true homeland is in heaven!!
