Professional athletes know the importance of having a focal point. The Philadelphia Phillies entered spring training with the goal of winning the World Series. That is their goal, their focal point that enable them to endure the ups and downs of the season. The Apostle Paul says that if we are to go the distance and not spiritually faint, we need an eternal focus. Paul did not discount the pain and suffering he experienced in serving the Lord. But neither did he obsess over them. Instead he saw that God was achieving in him something greater than his problems, an eternal weight of glory! And so he consciously focused on that which is eternal and permanent rather than on that which is time-bound and passing. An eternal focus is what we need if we desire to go the distance!
