Professional athletes know the importance of having a focal point. The Philadelphia Phillies entered spring training with the goal of winning the World Series. That is their goal, their focal point that enable them to endure the ups and downs of the season. The Apostle Paul says that if we are to go the distance and not spiritually faint, we need an eternal focus. Paul did not discount the pain and suffering he experienced in serving the Lord. But neither did he obsess over them. Instead he saw that God was achieving in him something greater than his problems, an eternal weight of glory! And when he compared his "light and momentary" troubles with the eternal glory awaiting him, he saw that there is NO COMPARISON! Heaven is beyond our imagination. And so he consciously focused on that which is eternal and permanent rather than on that which is time-bound and passing. An eternal focus is what we need if we desire to go the distance!

After issuing a sober warning to those who were in danger of apostatizing, of abandoning the faith, the preacher to the Hebrews seeks to encourage those who are genuine believers to keep on keeping on for the Lord. In the past they had experienced a great struggle by being persecuted for their faith. He reminds them of their past rewardable activities as Jesus has promised rewards for those persecuted for their faith. So, he encourages them not to forfeit their eternal rewards but rather secure their rewards by enduring to the end. When Jesus returns, His rewards will be with Him. Our focus in the present time is to be on doing the will of God, on obeying and serving the Lord. And the key to enduring is to live each day by faith! For the just will live by faith! Trusting the Lord each and every step of the way, living one day, one moment at a time, and thus enduring to the end of our lives, finishing well. And if we endure to the end we will receive our eternal rewards!

Faith deconstruction is the process of critically examining, dismantling, and reevaluating the religious beliefs you were taught. Positively it can lead to conversion. Negatively, it can result in apostasy. Apostasy is the intentional falling away or defection from the truth. An apostate has complete full knowledge of the truth. And in spite of knowing the truth, they willfully reject it. They differ from a disobedient Christian who is faithless in that an apostate denies the LORD. They reject the only sacrifice for sin, Jesus Christ Himself, and the gracious work of the Spirit of God. As a consequence, there is no hope of salvation for them but rather greater, certain judgment. The greater the light one has, the greater the judgment. And the certainty of judgment is due to the promise of God that vengeance belongs to Him. He will repay. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Therefore we need to be certain that we are genuine believers and not pretenders, possessing faith and salvation, and not not merely professing faith.

As a result of Jesus Christ being the perfect High Priest who has offered the perfect sacrifice for our sins once-and-for-all, how should we then respond to what Jesus Christ has done for us? That's the question the preacher to the Hebrews answers as he turns from his doctrinal dissertation on the high priestly ministry of Christ to the practical applications for us today. In our text today, he issues three exhortations-- three "Let us" which should be our priorities in life. First, let us draw near to God in sincere faith. Drawing near to God is made possible through the blood of Christ and the new and living way Jesus has paved for us. We are now able to draw near to God in full assurance of faith and thus can confidently come into God's presence. Secondly, let us hold fast in hope. Hope is faith projected to the future based on the promises of God. Holding fast means that we will not give up nor give in, but continue to trust the Lord until the end. Reformers called this the 'perseverance of the Saints." True, genuine believers hold fast till the end. And then thirdly, let us consider one another to love. We are to look for way to stir up love and good works among us. And they only way we can do so is by living in community with one another. As believers we need each other to encourage, to challenge, to spur one another on. There is safety is a community of believers. And we need to be meeting more often as we see the "Day" approaching-- the "Day" when Jesus returns for His own. Faith, Hope, and Love is the criteria which Paul used to evaluate the spiritual health and vitality of the early churches.

Whenever we see a product labeled, 'New and Improved!', we look for tangible evidence of new effectiveness or performance. The preacher to the Hebrews has been arguing for the superiority of Jesus Christ. He is the 'New and Improved!' His high priestly ministry is based on a superior covenant, the New Covenant, and a superior sacrifice. But is the 'New and Improved" an improvement over the old. In Hebrews 10, the preacher contrasts the ineffectiveness of the old with the new and improved sacrifice Jesus made for us. The old covenant sacrifices failed because they could not provide access to God nor could they remove sin. It is not possible for an amoral animal's blood to atone for man's moral offense against God. That's why Jesus Christ had a 'body prepared for Him", a perfect human body. And during His life, He never disobeyed His Father, but came to do the Father's will. He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death on the cross. As a result, His sacrifice sanctifies the believer, that is, makes us holy. His sacrifice effectively and permanently removed sin. His sacrifice destroyed our spiritual enemies. And the sacrifice Jesus made has fulfilled the promise of the New Covenant. We can now enjoy a personal, intimate relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ! We can draw near to God, living in God's presence!

Blessed is the son or daughter who has a mother to teach them what it means to have faith in and be a follower of Jesus Christ. Timothy was so blessed for his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois taught Timothy the Old Testament Scriptures that prepared him to exercise faith in Jesus as Messiah and Savior. But so did James and John, two of Jesus' apostles. Their mother, the 'wife of Zebedee' followed Jesus and cared for His needs. But she also expressed faith in Jesus. In a request that she makes of Jesus for her two sons to sit in prominent places in HIs kingdom, many think that she was a conniving woman seeking to weasel her two sons into the best seats of the house. But in reality, she believed that Jesus was about to set up His kingdom. Jesus had promised his disciples prominent positions in the kingdom. As a great mom, she believed that her two sons were the best, that they deserved the best, and was not afraid to ask Jesus to grant her request. But Jesus used this occasion to teach her and the disciples what is involved in being a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. They must be willing to 'drink the cup', to sacrifice and suffer for him. They must be willing to humbly serve others. But they also must be willing to accept the sovereign choice of God, for the best seat in His kingdom was not His to grant, but rather His Father's. And indeed she and her sons were fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ to the end. Her son, James, was the first martyred apostle; Her other son, John, lived a long life but was exiled on the island of Patmos. And she was present at the crucifixion and was a witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Why did Jesus have to die? Why was it necessary for the Son of God to be crucified? That a good question to ask in preparation for Good Friday. Jesus had to die because it was God's plan from eternity. He had to die to procure for us eternal redemption, and to cleanse our consciences from guilt. He had to die to complete Old Testament saint's salvation which they had only on credit. The credit bill had to be paid. As we will see in this message, Jesus Christ had to die because a testament or will demands death. The New Covenant is not in force until the death of the testator. He had to die because the heavenly sanctuary needed to be purified. The presence of Satan in heaven pollutes the heavenly sanctuary. The presence of Jesus Christ with His once-for-all sacrifice purifies it. And Jesus needed to die because judgment demands a substitute. Every man will one day face death and after that the judgment. When judged, either we pay for our own sin or else a substitute pays for them. Jesus Christ in his own body bore our sins at Calvary. He died for you and I, paying in full for our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins. He was condemned for us so that we do not need to fear condemnation when we stand before God. And His resurrection from the dead and second coming confirms that God the Father was satisfied with the sacrifice Jesus made for us! Jesus had to die because you and I need a savior! He died for you...and for me!

We are always looking for the best deals in life! The Jews thought that they had God's best deal in the Law and the Levitical sacrificial system. But the preacher to the Hebrews has been claiming that God offers a better deal in Jesus Christ. In Hebrews 9:1-15, the preacher is comparing the two: the Sanctuary, the Services, and the Significance. This sermon considers God's Best Deal Ever! The New Sanctuary is heavenly, not made with man's hands. The New Service Jesus offers differs from the old in that He offers His own blood as payment for our sin. It is offered only once for all and it results in permanent, eternal redemption. What all this means for us is that today we can have full access into God's presence. We have today permanent forgiveness of sins. Our conscience is cleansed by the blood of Christ so there is no guilt in life nor fear of death. And an added bonus is that the Old Testament saints who believed in God for their salvation have also been redeemed by the blood of Christ! They have received the 'promise of eternal inheritance'. The death of Jesus Christ has been and always will be the only source of eternal salvation! This is the Best Deal Ever!

'Is it right to do good on the Sabbath?' This was the questioned Jesus posed to the nit-picking Pharisees. Man was not made for the Sabbath but the Sabbath for man. And to prove His point, Jesus heals a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath. The healing of the shriveled hand, though, revealed the hardness of the Pharisee's hearts. What are the characteristics of a hardened heart, a closed mind? A hard-hearted person is not interested in discovering the truth, but rather in gathering ammunition to be used against another. A hard-hearted person is more concerned about being 'right' than they are about the welfare of others. They refuse to admit that they are wrong even when soundly rebuked. A hard-hearted individual fails to see the 'good' even when it is done right in front of their eyes. And a hard-hearted person, driven by mindless rage, is capable of doing anything, even murder. God desires for us to have soft hearts towards Him, and towards others.
