You’d think for all the time we’ve spent in Iceland we might’ve seen this coming. But sometimes Þetta reddast spirit can really bite you in the bum.

Every time there’s an eruption in Iceland, social media fills up with videos of people getting way too close for the perfect photo, drone shot, or yes... marshmallow roast.

Volcanoes are incredible, but they’re also unpredictable. Lava can look slow and harmless while hidden gases, unstable ground, and sudden changes create serious risks.

And this isn’t the only risky behavior tourists have become known for. Every year, visitors ignore warning signs, cross safety barriers, venture onto dangerous terrain, or take unnecessary risks for a better view, a better story, or a better Instagram post.

What many people don’t realize is that Iceland’s search and rescue teams are largely volunteer-based. When someone gets into trouble, it’s often ordinary Icelanders who leave their jobs, families, and personal lives to respond. They raise much of their own funding, train extensively, and sometimes put themselves at risk to rescue travelers who ignored clear safety guidance.

An important part of traveling well is recognizing that we are guests. Visiting another country isn’t just about what we can experience from a place. It’s also about how our actions affect the people who call that place home.

That might mean passing on the perfect photo. Staying behind the rope. Respecting a closure. Settling for a slightly less amazing view. It might even mean choosing not to take a risk you would be willing to take in a place you know well.

Good travel isn’t just about seeing beautiful places. It’s about caring for them. It’s about leaving communities better than we found them and ensuring that our adventure doesn’t become someone else’s emergency.

So here’s to being the kind of visitors who give back more than they take, who respect the land and the people who steward it, and who leave the lava-cooked s’mores to the internet.

Our trip with Lexington Christian Academy has come to a close. 🇮🇸

One of the chaperones shared this reflection with students as they returned home:

“Sometimes time away helps us see our ordinary lives with fresh eyes.

Today, let’s all take time to notice our own bedrooms, familiar faces, neighborhood trees, and all the small gifts that often fade into the background of daily life.

At the same time, it’s okay to miss what we left behind: the snowy mountains, endless waterfalls, fields of blue lupines, late-night conversations, new friendships, shared laughter, and the beautiful community that formed in Siglufjörður.

Travel changes us not only because of where we go, but because of how it teaches us to see. We return home carrying memories, gratitude, and a renewed sense of wonder for both the places we’ve visited and the lives waiting for us when we get back.”

Wise words, if ever there were any!

Our group from Lexington Christian Academy is having a blast in sunny Siglufjörður this week! From serving in the local forest on conservation projects to enjoying lunch beside waterfalls, we’ve been soaking in every moment and every laugh along the way.

There’s something special about immersing ourselves in both community and creation. We get to witness the beauty of this magnificent world, build meaningful connections, and play a small part in making it a little brighter.

The best guides are still willing to be travelers. 🌍

This week, we’re hosting the first of two cohorts from the Lilly Youth Theology Network as they embark on a journey of purpose, reflection, and service in Iceland.

These leaders have spent their careers helping young people explore vocation, discernment, faith, and calling. Now, for the next week, they’ll step into the experience themselves. Together, we’ll serve alongside the Salvation Army, share best practices, wrestle with big questions, and create space to reflect on our own journeys.

One of the things we love most about this work is that none of us ever graduate from the process of becoming. The work of purpose isn’t something we teach from a distance. It’s something we continue to practice ourselves.

4 things we love about the Azores 🌊🌿

1️⃣ The landscapes don’t make sense.

Volcanic craters. Black sand beaches. Hot springs. Waterfalls. Hydrangea-lined roads. Cows standing on cliffs above the Atlantic. Every five minutes you find yourself saying, “Wait... stop the car.”

2️⃣ The culture moves at human speed.

Long conversations. Long meals. Small communities. People who still seem to know their neighbors. The Azores feels like a place that quietly refuses to participate in the race the rest of us are running.

3️⃣ The islands reward curiosity.

You can spend the morning hiking to a crater lake, the afternoon helping a local community organization, and the evening eating seafood while watching the sun disappear into the Atlantic. Exploration isn’t something you schedule here. It just happens.

4️⃣ Compass goes there now. 👀

Which means we’re bringing the same blend of service, reflection, adventure, deep community, and purpose-focused experiences that we’ve spent years building in Iceland to a new corner of the world.
