Akureyri, Iceland last week was 🔥🌌✨

Last week, a group of leaders from the Youth Theology Network (FTE ) spent a Compass week together in northern Iceland!

We served alongside the Salvation Army Herdís Helgadóttir (including one particularly exciting adventure involving Lára Ósk Hlynsdóttir and a wasp 🐝), prepared and shared meals with local community members and immigrants, and danced the night away at Wednesday’s Family Night!

In our spare time, we also harnessed the collective wisdom of years and years of experience among these incredible practitioners to develop a shared resource that will support our work moving forward.

It was a week of long walks, car conversations, ice cream and cinnamon buns, northern lights, plenty of Collab, laughter, and Table Talk conversations beside a hot tub we never actually found time to fill (but future groups will!).

Grateful for this community, the work we share, and the chance to explore, reflect, and connect together in such a remarkable place. 🇮🇸💙

What if you spent it exploring Iceland or the Azores, serving alongside local organizations, hiking through landscapes that don’t quite look real, and having the kinds of conversations that make you think differently about who you are and what matters?

That’s Compass.

MEET YOUR COMPASS INSTRUCTOR: JONATHAN 👋

Pastor. Writer. Musician. Backpacker. Husband and dad. And someone who can often be found looking down an unmarked trail and saying:

“I wonder where this goes.”

Which, come to think of it, is a pretty great quality in a Compass instructor.

Jonathan is an American Baptist pastor, a bassoonist, and an avid explorer. Through his company, Wilderness Journeys, he leads backpacking trips, hikes, and wilderness retreats around the country.

He says he loves both the absurd and the poignant moments of life—the ones that make us laugh out loud and the ones that invite us to be still and silent.

Exploration. Reflection. A willingness to wander down the trail just to see where it leads.

Yep. He fits right in around here.

To quote Reykjavik Grapevine: “If the point of an eclipse is (broadly speaking) to stop seeing the sun in the daytime, then we’re doing amazing.”

You’d think for all the time we’ve spent in Iceland we might’ve seen this coming. But sometimes Þetta reddast spirit can really bite you in the bum.

Oh vwell. Only 170 years until the next one. Drink more COLLAB and we’ll be there.

Every time there’s an eruption in Iceland, social media fills up with videos of people getting way too close for the perfect photo, drone shot, or yes... marshmallow roast.

Volcanoes are incredible, but they’re also unpredictable. Lava can look slow and harmless while hidden gases, unstable ground, and sudden changes create serious risks.

And this isn’t the only risky behavior tourists have become known for. Every year, visitors ignore warning signs, cross safety barriers, venture onto dangerous terrain, or take unnecessary risks for a better view, a better story, or a better Instagram post.

What many people don’t realize is that Iceland’s search and rescue teams are largely volunteer-based. When someone gets into trouble, it’s often ordinary Icelanders who leave their jobs, families, and personal lives to respond. They raise much of their own funding, train extensively, and sometimes put themselves at risk to rescue travelers who ignored clear safety guidance.

An important part of traveling well is recognizing that we are guests. Visiting another country isn’t just about what we can experience from a place. It’s also about how our actions affect the people who call that place home.

That might mean passing on the perfect photo. Staying behind the rope. Respecting a closure. Settling for a slightly less amazing view. It might even mean choosing not to take a risk you would be willing to take in a place you know well.

Good travel isn’t just about seeing beautiful places. It’s about caring for them. It’s about leaving communities better than we found them and ensuring that our adventure doesn’t become someone else’s emergency.

So here’s to being the kind of visitors who give back more than they take, who respect the land and the people who steward it, and who leave the lava-cooked s’mores to the internet.

Our trip with Lexington Christian Academy has come to a close. 🇮🇸

One of the chaperones shared this reflection with students as they returned home:

“Sometimes time away helps us see our ordinary lives with fresh eyes.

Today, let’s all take time to notice our own bedrooms, familiar faces, neighborhood trees, and all the small gifts that often fade into the background of daily life.

At the same time, it’s okay to miss what we left behind: the snowy mountains, endless waterfalls, fields of blue lupines, late-night conversations, new friendships, shared laughter, and the beautiful community that formed in Siglufjörður.

Travel changes us not only because of where we go, but because of how it teaches us to see. We return home carrying memories, gratitude, and a renewed sense of wonder for both the places we’ve visited and the lives waiting for us when we get back.”

Wise words, if ever there were any!

Our group from Lexington Christian Academy is having a blast in sunny Siglufjörður this week! From serving in the local forest on conservation projects to enjoying lunch beside waterfalls, we’ve been soaking in every moment and every laugh along the way.

There’s something special about immersing ourselves in both community and creation. We get to witness the beauty of this magnificent world, build meaningful connections, and play a small part in making it a little brighter.

The best guides are still willing to be travelers. 🌍

This week, we’re hosting the first of two cohorts from the Lilly Youth Theology Network as they embark on a journey of purpose, reflection, and service in Iceland.

These leaders have spent their careers helping young people explore vocation, discernment, faith, and calling. Now, for the next week, they’ll step into the experience themselves. Together, we’ll serve alongside the Salvation Army, share best practices, wrestle with big questions, and create space to reflect on our own journeys.

One of the things we love most about this work is that none of us ever graduate from the process of becoming. The work of purpose isn’t something we teach from a distance. It’s something we continue to practice ourselves.
