Protected lands like Lookout Natural Area provide intact habitat where wildlife can move, feed, and winter undisturbed.

Due to its lower elevation, Lookout provides important forage during the winter months, when wildlife’s survival is most uncertain.

This property is contiguous with the Swakane Wildlife Unit, making it an important link for bighorn sheep and wintering mule deer by providing continuity to protected, high-quality habitat.

Zoe grew up in Boise, Idaho, and can’t remember a time when she didn’t love being outdoors! Hiking, biking, running, backpacking, and exploring have always been central to her life. She briefly left the Western mountains she loves to attend Bowdoin College in Maine, where she studied Earth and Oceanographic Science and Art History.

After graduating, Zoe thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail southbound from Canada to Mexico, deepening her appreciation for public lands and open spaces along the way.

At CDLT, Zoe will compile and analyze data from restoration projects along the Entiat River. She hopes to combine her passion for data and spatial science with land management and conservation work.

Since 2016, we’ve been tracking bird activity across 7 scenic spots—helping protect vital nesting habitat for 40+ species after past wildfires.

All skill levels are welcome 💚
- Expect a 5.3-mile hike (beautiful views included!)
- Surveys run from 6–11 AM

The name Lookout was chosen in partnership with the Colville Confederated Tribes (CCT). Ernie Brooks and Sharon Covington worked with the Language Program at CCT to identify the name of the place. In the Nxaʔamxcín language of the šnp̍əšqʷáw̉šəxʷ tribe, čkuwáx̌qən is the name for Lookout.

The šnp̍əšqʷáw̉šəxʷ are the Tribe of the Colville Confederated Tribes that took care of this land, lived off the land, and welcomed others.

The šnp̍əšqʷáw̉šəxʷ are the people that belonged to the lands that are now called the Wenatchee Valley. The name Lookout honors the landscape’s cultural significance and sweeping views, while capturing the spirit of a place where people and nature can thrive together.

Why is it important?
Lookout is unlike any other place in the Wenatchee Foothills. It provides important habitat for mule deer, bighorn sheep, native plants, and pollinators, while creating the opportunity for future public access close to home. Now that the land is protected, the next phase is to bring it to life with thoughtful trails, a trailhead, and long-term stewardship.

🚧Horse Lake Road is temporarily closed

Due to extremely dry conditions and increased wildfire risk, Chelan County has temporarily closed Horse Lake Road, which provides vehicle access to Horse Lake Reserve.

The road closure begins at the gate on the dirt portion of Horse Lake Road and is expected to remain in place for several weeks, depending on conditions and fire safety concerns.

👉The good news: Horse Lake Reserve trails are still open! People can continue to access the Horse Lake trails by foot using other connecting trails.

We know Horse Lake is a favorite place to get outside, and we appreciate everyone’s help keeping our community and local firefighters safe during these challenging wildfire conditions.

We’ll share updates when we know more about when road access can safely reopen.
