Since 2005, WCW Senior Research Scientist Nan Stein has researched, written and evaluated Shifting Boundaries (SB): Lessons on Relationships for Students in Middle School, a sexual harassment/teen dating violence prevention intervention for schools.

This July, members of Secretaría de Educación de Bogotá — Carolina Ibarra, Mariana Ogliastri, Diayana Murcia, and María Gabriela Moncada — joined with Nan at the Crimes against Children Research Center’s Prevention Research Conference to share how SB was translated, adapted, and tested in Bogotá, Colombia, and what the cross-site evidence suggests about mechanisms, feasibility, and scaling-up.

We were delighted to welcome Carolyn M. Elliott '59, the founding director of the Wellesley Center for Research on Women (which later became WCW), to Simpson Cottage this week. During her visit, we dedicated a portrait of Barbara W. Newell, who served as president of Wellesley College from 1972 to 1980 and founded the Wellesley Center for Research on Women in 1974. Without these two incredible women, WCW would not be the powerhouse it is today!

Carolyn, who served as director from 1974 to 1980, shared stories from the Center's founding with researchers and staff. We were also happy to be joined by Susan McGee Bailey '63, who served as director from 1985 to 2010.

The digital world is evolving with AI — are youth ready to navigate it with confidence? 💻✨

Join the Youth, Media, and Wellbeing Lab for a FREE Virtual Summer Digital Wellbeing & AI Literacy Workshop! This week-long experience is designed specifically for middle school girls and allies (ages 11–15) to explore self-image and mental wellbeing in the age of AI. Through small-group, project-based collaborative work, participants will learn how to build a positive online presence and support themselves and others in AI-filled social media spaces.

⏰ Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Laura Mamo, Ph.D. as the next executive director of the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College! Currently the director and a professor of public health at the Health Equity Institute at San Francisco State University, Laura will join WCW in September.

As the Katherine Stone Kaufmann ’67 Executive Director, Laura will play a key leadership role in advancing WCW’s core mission: to drive meaningful progress for women and girls through research and action. She will also be a professor in the Wellesley College Department of Sociology, pending successful tenure review.

Laura is an outstanding scholar and an institution builder with a proven track record of establishing partnerships and programs that enable interdisciplinary, community-based, policy-relevant research. Her scholarship and her ability to mentor and support researchers in all career stages, combined with her targeted advocacy work, make her the ideal strategic leader for this role. She will build on the Centers’ 50-year legacy of propelling social change through rigorous research and scholarship to lead WCW into our next era.
