Twenty-five years after September 11, Patti Quigley and Susan Retik’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can grow from loss.

This month, PEOPLE shared their story—from losing their husbands on September 11 to finding one another, connecting with Razia Jan, and dedicating themselves to supporting Afghan families.

Now, that work continues in new ways. Patti and Susan completed the final Beyond the Bike ride, while Razia’s story is being honored at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

What began in the aftermath of tragedy now endures through more than 900 girls learning at the Zabuli Education Center and continued support for widowed mothers.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

We also remember the people who, in the days and years that followed, found ways to turn their grief into something meaningful.

For Razia Jan, that meant bringing people together and creating opportunity for girls in Afghanistan. Her journey ultimately led to a school where over 900 Afghan girls receive an education today.

It also led her to Patti Quigley, who, after losing her husband on 9/11, dedicated herself to helping others and became Razia’s partner in building a brighter future for Afghan girls.

The stories of how Razia and Patti turned loss into a commitment to helping others are worth remembering. You can learn more about Razia's through the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and about Patti in PEOPLE’s recent feature using the links in our bio.

In the years after September 11, Razia brought members of her community together to help families in Afghanistan.

Her efforts grew from humanitarian support into a bold vision: a free school where Afghan girls could learn safely.

Many people told Razia it would be impossible.

She built it anyway.

Twenty-five years later, her legacy endures through every girl at the Zabuli Education Center.

This week, we were happy to welcome our students back to the Zabuli Education Center after their summer vacation! 💛📚

Returning to the classroom also brought exciting midterm exam results, with 834 of our 903 students earning As. These grades reflect all of the time, effort, and dedication they invested in their studies, and we couldn't be prouder.

Most importantly, we are celebrating each student who showed up ready to learn, embraced new challenges, and continued growing this semester. Every girl has accomplished something incredible, and we can't wait to see all they'll achieve in the months ahead.

A recent letter from one of our graduates to her former sponsor.

Her words remind us that a love of learning continues long after the classroom. 💛🦋
