A new roof for a hometown hero. 🇺🇸

We created Shelter for Service as a way to give back to a veteran in need right here in our community.

Every year, our team provides one roof at no cost to a veteran nominated by the people who know them best. The final recipient is chosen by fellow veterans alongside Salute of Virginia.

If you know a veteran whose home could use a new roof, nominations are now open through August 31st.

Veteran must own and live in the home. Home must be within our service area. Nominations do not guarantee selection. Additional eligibility requirements may apply.

In this episode of Veteran Story Hour, we hear from Tom Thompson, a Vietnam veteran and Air Force medic whose service carried him from military hospitals to evacuation missions, from the villages of Vietnam to the long road of living with PTSD.

Tom’s story is not only about what happened in war. It is about what war asks a person to carry afterward.

He speaks about treating the wounded, caring for civilians, witnessing devastating loss, and serving alongside men like William H. Pitsenbarger, the Air Force pararescueman whose courage would later be recognized with the Medal of Honor. He also speaks openly about trauma, family, memory, and the importance of veterans continuing to support one another.

At SALUTE of Virginia, we believe these stories deserve to be heard with respect, patience, and care. Tom’s episode is a powerful reminder that service does not end when the uniform comes off, and neither should our commitment to those who wore it.
