Hey you. Human. I need a favor.

My name is Fergie. The people here at the shelter say I'm about 5 years old, but they aren't completely sure because I came in as a stray and my people never reclaimed me. I don't really know either because I can't count and have no concept of time or age. As you can see, I'm a gorgeous bulldog mix and obviously I am a certified Good Girl™️

Now, about that favor. I have a thing called pyometra. The humans here are worried because it's a really serious infection in my uterus. I'm already on medicine to help, but it would be a whole lot better if I could hang out at your house instead of the shelter, at least until I recover from my spay surgery I'm getting on Tuesday. What do you think? Can I crash at your place for a while?

If you're already a foster, let the shelter know if you can take me home. If you're not, write some human stuff on this thing: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/foster/SVAS/Dog

If you can't foster me (or one of my friends here at the shelter), but still wanna help out, you can send some money to the people who pay for the treatments the shelter doesn't cover.

Say hello to Silverleaf. He is potentially the sweetest cat you'll ever meet.

Silverleaf was an owner surrender because they had too many animals and were unable to care for him. Upon entering the shelter, staff noticed him having seizures. He's been in foster since then, but even with medication, Silverleaf is still having seizures.

We're working to get Silverleaf an appointment to see what can be done to get him feeling good and ready to go to his forever home. Can you help us?

You know that feeling when you're congested and can't breathe through your nose, and you realize how much you took breathing normally for granted? Snorkel does. And we do, too, that's why we couldn't say no to covering Snorkel's vet visit so he could breathe easy again.

This charming gentleman was so congested that shelter staff, and even the vet were almost positive he had a polyp blocking his airway. He was sedated for the removal procedure, and what did they find? A large growth? A foreign body? Buried Treasure?

Nope. Just boogers. So, so many boogers. 😂

Those got flushed out, and if you know anything about cats, that's a process that's better done under sedation anyway. Unless you're not particularly attached to your skin. So, Snorkel is safely back at the shelter with some meds to help him breathe easier and not get so...boogery moving forward.

So please, take a deep breath (through your nose) and take a moment with us to genuinely appreciate being able to do so. And if you're congested, you have our and Snorkel's sympathy.

While our area is officially in a drought, it is literally raining cats and dogs at the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Animal Shelter and they need your help!

If you have a little extra room in your heart and your house, fosters are desperately needed.

By getting a pet out of the shelter and into a home, you're not only helping that pet, but you're helping the next one who comes in by freeing up space on site. Shelter life is stressful for pets, and being in a home can help them become their best, most adoptable selves.

Ready to get your feet wet? Learn more, and apply here: https://svasc.net/foster/

Have the space in your heart, but can't bring another pet home? Volunteers are always needed. Take dogs out for walks, play with the cats, or help with administrative or cleaning tasks if those are more your style. Learn more, and apply here: https://svasc.net/volunteer/

These are just a few of the pets currently at the shelter; inventory changes daily.

Typically, our updates are happy ones. Sometimes, in spite of everyone's best efforts that's not the update we have to give.

You all may remember Morken, a sweet senior who arrived at the shelter in February in rough shape. He had an upper respiratory infection and was losing weight despite eating well and there was no clear cause, initially.

We covered some additional vetting, and Morken's health continued to deteriorate through several different interventions. Ultimately, it was time to look at Morken's quality of life. The vet and shelter agreed that since none of the treatments were helping, and he was consistently getting worse, the most compassionate choice for Morken was humane euthanasia. This is heartbreaking, and is not the outcome anyone wanted.

Our thanks and condolences go out to his foster mom, Andi, who got Morken out of the shelter and gave him a comfy home for the last three months of his life.

Any remaining funds donated toward Morken's care will go to care for other pets in need.

Mr. Mister captured everyone's hearts, so we wanted to give you all a quick update.

If you remember where we previously left off, we'd learned that Mr. Mister was very underweight, and needed to put some weight on before he could safely undergo surgery. He'd also started drops to alleviate the pain and inflammation in his eyes.

We are happy to report that not only have the drops reduced the swelling in Mr. Mister's eyelids so drastically that it was determined that surgery wasn't necessary, but he was also ADOPTED by his finder, turned foster, Johnny Shifflett!

Congratulations, Mr. Mister and Johnny!

Any remaining funds donated for Mr. Mister's care will be used toward providing medical care to other shelter animals in need.
