PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT — WASHINGTON POST OFFICE

August 27th, the Washington Post Office experienced an electrical fire.

USPS completed an inspection of the building today. The inspection confirmed a short within an electrical circuit and identified additional repairs that must be completed to bring the building into compliance with current safety codes.

Because this building is connected to Washington’s historic downtown section, an electrical fire at this location could place several neighboring structures, businesses, and lives at risk. As Fire Chief, I made the decision to have the power company remove the electrical meter and disconnect power to the building. This decision was not made lightly, but protecting our community must always come first. Ps those concerned about the town administrator throwing me under the bus. I promise he swiftly picked me up and took me for a dreamy walk on the beach😆

While repairs are being addressed, the Post Office will remain accessible for PO Box mail. USPS personnel will also be available from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. for package pickup.

Please give a little grace to our postal workers. Amelia has been placed in a tough position communicating between USPS and the Landlord of this property.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while repairs are completed.

Today, I want to take a moment to recognize the men who make up our department!

This past year has brought us a lot—great memories, difficult calls, and some moments that have challenged us in ways we didn’t expect. Through all of it, you continued to show up.

You give your time, sacrifice time with your families, lose sleep, and answer the tones because someone in our community needs help.

You don’t do it for a paycheck. You do it because you care, and because you believe in serving others.

As Chief, I’m incredibly proud of the dedication, selflessness, and strength you continue to show.

We may be a small department, but we are growing. Watching new members come in, learn, and grow alongside us is something I’m proud to be a part of.

To every member of this department and every family of this department. Thank you for your commitment, your sacrifice, and for continuing to answer the call.

🚒 Can Emergency Responders Find Your Home?

One of the simplest things you can do to help firefighters, EMS, and law enforcement respond quickly in an emergency is to make sure your address is clearly visible from the road.

When someone calls 911, every second matters. If responders have difficulty locating an address because numbers are missing, faded, blocked by landscaping, or not visible at night, valuable time can be lost when it matters most.

Google Maps can only get us so close, which is why a clear address is so important!

Please take a moment to check that your address:
✅ Is clearly displayed on your home, mailbox, or both
✅ Uses numbers that are large enough to be seen from the roadway
✅ Is not blocked by trees, bushes, decorations, or vehicles
✅ Can be seen during both daytime and nighttime hours
✅ Contrasts with the background color for easy visibility

This is especially important for homes located on rural roads, long driveways, or areas with limited lighting.

We hope you never need to call 911, but if you do, a clearly visible address can help emergency responders get to you as quickly as possible.
