Slovaktown, Arkansas, a unique Slovak-American community in the South, has long been overlooked in both American and Slovak history. Founded in 1894, by Slovak immigrants seeking a better life, it became a beacon of hope for those escaping the harsh conditions they encountered in factories and mines after immigrating to the United States. Today, the descendants of the original settlers continue to honor their Slovak heritage, but the town’s cultural legacy is at risk as elders pass away and traditions fade.

In Deah Partak's presentation of “Slovakia in the South” (1hr. 47mins.), you will learn how Slovaktown fits into our shared Slovak story. You will also learn about the efforts UpRooted Media is making to preserve this rich history and to secure the community’s place in recorded Slovak-American heritage.

Deah Partak, a dual citizen of the United States and Slovakia, is based in Portland, Oregon. She is a private psychotherapist and the president of UpRooted Media, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting multicultural awareness and representation in history and media. Through this work, she preserves and shares cultural heritage for the prosperity of both current and future generations. With a deep understanding of how ancestral and personal histories shape life purpose and legacy, Deah devotes much of her time to capturing the stories of Slovaks living abroad.

Deah and her team have been featured on RTVS Radio Slovensko, on Radio Slovakia International, and in various Arkansas newspapers. They have also given presentations to Slovak and historical organizations, to shed light on the contributions of Slovak-descended and Slovakia-born individuals living in the Americas.

In the early 1990s, Slovak journalists fought for the freedom to report without political control. Three decades later, that freedom can no longer be taken for granted, but there is another challenge in sight: today, journalists must also persuade audiences that facts still matter. Social media, political pressure, disinformation, and declining confidence in institutions have made trust as important as freedom itself. The story of Slovak journalism since 1993 is therefore not only about winning independence, but also about earning credibility every day.

Eva Frantová graduated from the Faculty of Applied Languages at the University of Economics, in Bratislava. During her studies, she spent three semesters at universities in Hamburg (Germany), Rijeka (Croatia), and Eisenstadt (Austria). Alongside her studies, she began working for the Slovak News Agency. Since August 2021, she has worked for Petit Press as an economic reporter at the daily newspaper SME—first for INDEX magazine and currently as a podcast host for Dobré ráno and Index. In 2023, she received the Journalism Award from the Open Society Foundation, for a special episode of Index. In 2025/26, she completed a 10-month Fulbright scholarship for academic study and professional development in the United States. She spent the academic year at a university in Arizona, and then completed a six-week internship in Washington, D.C.

Slovenské národné povstanie patrí k najvýznamnejším udalostiam našich moderných dejín. Nebolo iba vojenským vystúpením proti nacistickému režimu. Bolo prejavom odvahy ľudí, ktorí v rozhodujúcej chvíli odmietli zostať bokom a prijali zodpovednosť za budúcnosť svojej krajiny.

Povstanie je preto klenotom nášho dejinného príbehu. Jeho odkaz však nepatrí iba minulosti. Práve dnes si musíme uvedomovať, že sloboda, demokracia, suverenita a ľudská dôstojnosť nie sú samozrejmosťou. Sú hodnotami, ktoré si každá generácia musí chrániť.

Slovenské národné povstanie nám zároveň pripomína, že dejiny nemožno prispôsobovať potrebám prítomnosti. Musíme ich poznať a pomenovať pravdivo, pretože len národ, ktorý rozumie vlastnej minulosti, dokáže zodpovedne rozhodovať o svojej budúcnosti.

Dnes vzdávame úctu všetkým vojakom, partizánom a občanom, ktorí sa do Slovenského národného povstania zapojili a v rozhodujúcej chvíli sa postavili proti nacizmu a jeho ideológii.

Spomíname na tých, ktorí bojovali v horách, i na tých, ktorí odboju pomáhali v mestách a obciach, často s vedomím, že za svoje rozhodnutie môžu zaplatiť životom. Pripomíname si aj tisíce obetí následných represálií, ktorých osudy zostávajú navždy súčasťou našich dejín.

Česť všetkým, ktorí sa postavili na odpor nacizmu. S úctou si pripomíname tých, ktorí v tomto boji položili svoje životy a vážime si všetkých, ktorí jeho odkaz nesú dodnes.

Slovenské národné povstanie zostáva živou súčasťou našich dejín.

Global Language Center (GLC) is pleased to announce that we are hiring for a Slovak Language and Culture Instructor (LI 2) Position to teach at the U.S. Department of State National Foreign Affairs Training Center (NFATC).

The details of the assignment are as follows:
· Start Date: 8/17/2026 (or as soon as badged) End Date: 4/23/2027
· Rate: $50-$52/hour
· Full-time (40 hours per week, 8 hours per day / Monday-Friday) 100% in-person presence required at the NFATC campus in Arlington, VA This is a contractor position which may be renewed based on NFATC’s requirements and needs. Assignments are frequently extended beyond the initial end date.
· This position is eligible for benefits.
