Hosted by the Legal Counsel for the Elderly/ Office of the DC Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Breaking Barriers 2026 is a free, fully accessible one-day virtual event designed to educate, elevate, and empower communities around the full spectrum of disability-related barriers — visual, hearing, motor, cognitive, and transportation-related.
The event opens with a powerful keynote from a resident of a long-term care facility, followed by six in-depth sessions offering free CEUs for nurses and social workers. Accessibility is built into every layer of the forum, including real-time CART captioning, certified ASL/CDI interpretation, audio description, an accessible chat and Q&A experience, and full compatibility with assistive technologies such as screen readers, switch access, and eye-gaze devices.
Breaking Barriers goes beyond awareness to drive meaningful action on the systemic issues affecting people with disabilities.

Age-Friendly DC is proud to present "Intersections of ageism and ableism: Younger/Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias in the Spotlight" with co-presenters from DC Health and the DC Department of Aging and Community Living.
