WILS Since 1997, WILS has served people of all ages, from children to seniors with disabilities in Benton, Henry, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, & Saline Counties.

WILS works to empower people with disabilities to achieve and maintain their independence. As a Center for Independent Living (CIL), WILS is a consumer driven, non-residential, 501(c)3 nonprofit resource center that empowers people with disabilities to take charge of their lives and live as independently as possible. WILS staff and consumers work together to remove barriers and prejudices in society so that all individuals can live, can work and can enjoy all that their communities have to offer. Fifty-one percent of our staff and board of directors are persons with disabilities; we are who we serve.

🏠 Wait…you can choose who helps you at home?

For eligible Missourians, yes! Missouri's Consumer Directed Services (CDS) program allows participants with Medicaid to recruit, hire, train, and supervise their own personal care attendants.

That means having a say in who comes into your home and how your assistance is provided. Because needing help with everyday activities shouldn't mean giving up control.

😬 “I'll only be here a minute.”

That's what someone may say when they park in the striped area beside an accessible parking space. But that space isn't extra parking. It may be the only room someone has to deploy a wheelchair ramp or lift. One minute is all it takes to block someone's access.

Please keep those striped spaces clear. ♿

Learning, connecting, and discovering new resources! 💡

WILS staff members Teresa and Shawn recently attended the Johnson County Professionals in Aging meeting, hosted by Johnson County Community Health Services, where Missouri Assistive Technology shared information about tools and resources that help people with disabilities live more independently.

We're grateful for opportunities to learn from community partners and bring valuable information back to the people we serve!

MYTH: Centers for Independent Living are places where people with disabilities live.
REALITY: Nope. 🙂
WILS isn't a residential facility.
“Independent Living” is about something much bigger:
People with disabilities having choice and control over their own lives.
That might mean removing a barrier, learning a skill, finding the right tool, navigating resources, advocating for access or getting support to remain at home and in the community.
The name can be confusing.
The idea shouldn't be.

Voice-to-text on your phone? Also AT.
Sometimes the best tool for independence isn't expensive or high-tech.
It's simply the thing that makes something easier to do yourself.

🎣 Outdoors Without Limits was a great day at Hazel Hill Lake!
From first casts to showing off the catch, participants spent the morning fishing, enjoying the outdoors, and trying something new alongside friends, family, volunteers, and community partners.
This year, over 150 participants and volunteers joined us for Outdoors Without Limits! Events like this are about more than a day at the lake—they’re about creating opportunities for people with disabilities to participate, connect, and enjoy their community.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day possible, including our community partners, sponsors, volunteers, staff, and everyone who came out and joined us. 💜
