WILS Since 1997, WILS has served people of all ages, from children to seniors with disabilities in Benton, Henry, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, & Saline Counties.

WILS works to empower people with disabilities to achieve and maintain their independence. As a Center for Independent Living (CIL), WILS is a consumer driven, non-residential, 501(c)3 nonprofit resource center that empowers people with disabilities to take charge of their lives and live as independently as possible. WILS staff and consumers work together to remove barriers and prejudices in socie

ty so that all individuals can live, can work and can enjoy all that their communities have to offer. Fifty-one percent of our staff and board of directors are persons with disabilities; we are who we serve.

A service animal isn't just accompanying its handler. The dog may be performing tasks that are important to that person's safety and independence. Admire from afar—and let them work. 💙

For someone who relies on powered medical or assistive equipment, an outage can become much more than an inconvenience.

September is National Preparedness Month—a good reminder to think about medications, backup power, emergency contacts, transportation, communication needs, service animals, and personal assistance.

♿ Here's an accessibility challenge for your next trip around town: Look at the route, not just the entrance.
Could someone using a wheelchair get from the parking lot to the door?
Is the curb cut blocked?
Does the sidewalk suddenly end?
Is the accessible route actually accessible?
Sometimes a building has an accessible entrance—but getting there is the real problem.
Once you start noticing barriers, they're hard to unsee.

A Case Manager can help explore options, identify resources, work through barriers, and support goals—but those goals should reflect what matters to the person receiving support.

Want to help someone with a disability? There's one easy thing you can do first:

ASK. “Would you like some help?”

That simple question respects a person's independence and gives them the opportunity to tell you what—if anything—would actually be helpful.

And remember: wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility devices are part of someone's personal space. Don't grab or move them without permission. Kindness + respect = a pretty good combination. 💙

You don't have to know which WILS program you need before you call us. You don't need to know the right acronym. You don't need to have everything figured out.

Tell us what's getting in the way of your independence, and we'll help you explore resources and possible next steps. Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.
