Not much to complain about if you are a fan of early fall weather. Ample sunshine with pleasant highs in the mid to upper 70s for most. Winds will be light out of the north to northeast under 10mph. The end of the work week and weekend continue to trend drier for northern and northwest Missouri, with most precipitation pushing further eastward. That should allow pleasant conditions to continue over the coming days.

A few showers and rumbles of thunder will move through the area today and this evening before giving way to a drier mid-week. Temperatures will remain around or just on the cool side of normal this time of the year with highs mostly in the 70s. Late week into the weekend, widespread rain chances do look to return as remnants of a tropical system move in.

A busy morning in the space weather environment.

First and foremost, a strong X1.3 solar flare was just detected around a new active region turning into view off the southeast limb. The time of the flare was 09:43 UTC (Sept 12). We will get a better look at the source region during the next 24 hours. A further update will be provided later this morning if a CME is associated.

Secondly, the solar wind stream continues to indicate CME effects with a further speed increase to above 500 km/s. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has also been tipped south at times. Minor (G1) to Moderate (G2) geomagnetic storming is likely during the next 24 hours.

The solar data is in for the month of August and it goes without saying, Solar Cycle 25 hit new highs. The average solar flux index was 245.6 and the sunspot number average was 215.5. These numbers far exceed what was predicted for the current sunspot cycle, completely dwarfs the previous cycle 24 and rivals what was observed over 20 years ago during solar cycle 23. Pretty impressive stuff.

The next 2-3 months will be crucial ham radio operators in the northern hemisphere hoping for excellent F2 layer propagation at higher frequencies. Should the solar flux index remain above the 200 threshold, F2 openings on 6 meters (50 MHz) will be likely during fall and early winter.

Ever seen a $275 hunk of old used wire? When I originally bought this control cable for my IC-7000 it cost $36. Today the price tag for this out of stock part is astronomical, if you can find one. Today, after a long search I found mine again, buried deep in my crate of random wire! ---KBØHV
