Top Hat Wednesday: Give One Tool a Checkup
You do not need to buy anything today to improve your safety.
Pick one safety tool you already use and give it a checkup.
Ask yourself:
Does it still work?
Can I find it quickly?
Can I use it without assistance if I need to?
Do I actually know how to use all of the features I depend on?
Would I remember how to use it if I were rushed, stressed, or distracted?
Sometimes safety improvement is not adding another thing.
Sometimes it is making the things we already have more usable.
Your Top Hat challenge today is simple: choose one tool and spend five minutes making it more useful to Future You.
Charge it. Move it. Practice with it. Update it. Replace the battery. Add the information you have been meaning to add.
Five minutes counts.

Substack Tuesday: The People Around Our Tools
A safety tool rarely exists completely on its own.
Someone may need to know where it is. Someone may need to understand how it works. Someone may need to respect your decision about whether you want to use it at all.
That is why this week we are looking at Safety Tools and Devices through the Community pillar of Universal Design for Safety.
Our deeper conversation is on Substack today, where we are exploring how Safety, Belonging, and Authenticity affect the tools and support systems we build around ourselves.
Facebook gives us a place to start the conversation. Substack gives us room to pull the idea apart and look at it more closely.
If you have ever had someone assume they knew what was safest for you without asking, this week's conversation may feel familiar.
Read the full discussion on our Substack and tell us what you think.

Safety Positive is reimagining safety through the Universal Design for Safety Method. We believe no one should be left out of safety conversations because of disability, age, background, or life experience. Here you’ll find practical safety insights. Monday Tea: Who Is Part of Your Safety System?
Your safety toolkit is not always something you can put in a bag.
Sometimes it is a person.
Take a moment today and think about this:
If something unexpected happened, who knows how you prefer to be supported?
Do they know what tools you use?
Do they know where important information is?
Do they know when you want help and when you want space to handle something yourself?
Having community can increase safety, but support should not automatically turn into someone else taking over.
One of the things we explore through Universal Design for Safety is how we can build community that supports both safety and autonomy.
Your small action for today can be as simple as having one conversation with someone you trust about what helpful support actually looks like for you.
Tonight at Safety Positive Teatime, we will dig deeper into the Community pillar and how our tools, people, and choices can work together.
Teatime begins at 7:30 PM Central.

Yin-Yang Ducks: Community
SAFETY NEGATIVE:
“You need this safety tool because you cannot safely do that yourself.”
SAFETY POSITIVE:
“Here are some options. Which tool helps you do this in the way that works best for you?”
The difference is bigger than the tool itself.
When we look at safety through the Community pillar of Universal Design for Safety, we are thinking about Safety, Belonging, and Authenticity.
A safety tool should not become another excuse to make assumptions about what someone can or cannot do.
The goal is to create more choices.
Maybe one person wants technology. Another prefers a low-tech solution. Someone else may want assistance from another person. Someone may use a combination depending on the situation.
Safety Positive does not mean deciding what somebody else needs.
It means creating access to options, information, and skills so people can make informed choices about their own safety.
That is the difference between handing someone a solution and helping them build a safety system that belongs to them.

The Brew + Safety Solution Talks
We have two ways to connect with Safety Positive today, and they serve two very different purposes.
At 10:00 AM Central, join us for The Brew.
The Brew is our weekly bite-sized version of Safety Positive Teatime. We take one part of the weekly safety conversation and get straight into the nitty gritty in about 15 minutes, with a few moments afterward for questions.
This is not another hour-long meeting.
Think of The Brew as the lunch-sized portion. If you want the whole meal, Monday Teatime gives us more time to explore, hear different perspectives, ask questions, and build community.
Then tonight at 7:30 PM Central, we are launching our first Safety Solution Talk.
Safety Solution Talks will happen on the 3rd of each month and are designed to move beyond identifying problems. We want to talk about solutions: what can we do differently, what can organizations do differently, and what can our communities build together?
Two different conversations. Two different ways to participate. More choices for how you engage with safety education.
That is Universal Design for Safety in practice.
The Brew Zoom link will be posted here on Facebook. Paid members receive the link directly.

Top Hat Wednesday: What Counts as a Safety Tool?
When you hear the words “safety tool,” what comes to mind?
For some people, it may be an alarm, a personal safety device, or first aid supplies.
But your safety toolkit may also include your phone, headphones, a white cane, a mobility device, emergency medication, communication cards, a power bank, an NFC tag, downloaded music that helps you regulate, or a trusted person you know you can call.
A tool does not have to look like traditional safety equipment to support your safety.
That is where Universal Design for Safety changes the conversation. Instead of asking whether everyone should carry the same thing, we ask whether the tool helps the individual create more choice, access, confidence, and independence.
Top Hat question for today:
What is one everyday item you use that makes your life safer, even if you have never thought of it as a “safety tool” before?

September Kickoff
September is here, and we have a lot brewing at Safety Positive.
This month we are exploring Safety Tools and Devices through the Universal Design for Safety Method we have been using all year. We are not just asking, “What safety tool should I buy?” We are asking a better question: “What helps me create safety in a way that works for my body, my mind, my environment, and my life?”
We also have several new ways to connect with us this month.
Safety Solution Talks begin September 3 and will happen on the 3rd of each month. These are solution-focused conversations where we make space for people to share ideas about how we can build safer communities together.
The Brew is now happening every Thursday at 10:00 AM Central on Zoom. Think of The Brew as the lunch-sized version of our weekly Teatime. In about 15 minutes, we get straight into the nitty gritty of one safety idea, with a few moments afterward for questions. This is not another hour-long talk. If you want the whole meal, Monday Teatime is still the place to be.
The Zoom link for The Brew will be shared here on Facebook. Paid members will also receive the link directly.
Tuesdays are also becoming our Substack days. We will use Substack to go deeper into the ideas we are exploring, while Facebook remains a place to connect, reflect, and practice together.
Paid Pirates will also have access to our Reset Training on the final two Tuesdays of September.
And one more thing: our current Safety Positive shirt designs are available only through October 15. After that, these designs are retiring.
Different people need different ways to learn, connect, practice, and participate. Offering more choices is not extra. It is Safety Positive practicing what we teach.
What are you most interested in exploring with us this month?
