Every community has an architecture.
Anne Marie Rossi’s Living Architecture: The Materiality of Community brings together more than 30 sculptural works arranged into five “sculptural communities.” Through wrapping, binding, weaving, casting, and exposing their structures, Rossi explores what holds people and structures together, asking: How can difference become structure rather than division?
Some parts are opaque and protective; others remain transparent enough to reveal what holds them together. Moving between shelter and exposure, individuality and interdependence, Rossi’s materials are not illustrations of these ideas. They physically enact them.
A Rhode Island-based artist working across sculpture, assemblage, drawing, painting, and mixed media, Rossi explores the visceral interplay between the human and natural worlds through layered materials, seeking connections between the material and the ethereal, the seen and unseen.
We invite you to spend some time with Rossi’s sculptural communities and look closely at how their varied parts support, yield, carry weight, and remain visible to one another.
Join us Saturday, November 7 at 3 PM for Inside Living Architecture, a film premiere and artist & filmmaker conversation with Anne Marie Rossi and filmmaker Katie Reeves. The afternoon will include live jazz by Phil Gruppuso and John DeBossu, a screening of Reeves’ new short film documenting Rossi’s process, audience Q&A, a collaborative poem, and more.
