August is Make-A-Will Month, a good reminder that a will isn’t just about deciding what happens to your belongings. It’s also an opportunity to think about what you want your legacy to look like.

For many of us, that legacy is tied to a place: a favorite lake, a family cabin, a stretch of woods, or the waters and wildlife that have been part of our lives since childhood.

A gift to Northern Waters Land Trust through your will or estate plan can help ensure that the places you love remain protected for generations to come. Whether it’s a gift of land, financial assets, or another form of planned gift, your generosity can help protect clean water and special places long into the future.
This Make-A-Will Month, consider adding conservation to your legacy. 💙🌲

Protecting 40 acres may seem small, but conservation is about connecting the landscape.

Northern Waters Land Trust recently partnered to permanently protect a 40-acre property in Cass County that was conveyed into public ownership and is now open for hunting and other outdoor recreation.

Surrounded by existing county and federal land, this acquisition fills a critical gap in a larger block of public forest, improving wildlife habitat, supporting sustainable forest management, and expanding public access.

The property also lies within the Girl Lake watershed, helping advance the goal of protecting at least 75% of priority cold-water lake watersheds—an important benchmark for maintaining clean water and healthy fisheries. Its mature forest and wetlands will continue to filter water, provide wildlife habitat, and benefit future generations.

Every acre protected strengthens the health of our forests, lakes, and communities. 🌲💧

A day to remember on Big Mantrap Lake 🌲🎉

Last week, we gathered with partners, supporters, neighbors, and community members to celebrate the grand opening of the Mantrap Wildlife Management Area, a milestone years in the making.

Together, we celebrated the permanent protection of 449 acres and nearly 6 miles of shoreline on Big Mantrap Lake, ensuring this incredible landscape will remain a haven for wildlife, clean water, and outdoor recreation for generations to come. Once privately owned and accessible to only a few, this remarkable property is now permanently protected and open for everyone to enjoy.

Guests explored the property on guided hikes and pontoon tours, enjoyed live music, and learned about the history and ecological significance of this special place. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate this incredible conservation achievement.

This effort wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our partners, funders, volunteers, and supporters. Thank you to everyone who helped make this vision a reality, including the Big Mantrap Lake Association volunteers who graciously provided boat tours for guests to see the newly protected shoreline first hand. And a special thank you to the Minnesota DNR, who will steward the Mantrap Wildlife Management Area into the future.

This conservation success will leave a lasting impact on Minnesota’s lakes, forests, wildlife, and communities for generations to come. 💙🌿

🌲 Happy Arbor Day!🌲

Everything we do on land flows downstream. Forests help filter and store water, protect shorelines, and keep our lakes healthy for fish and wildlife. When we protect forests, we protect water. 🌿

Enjoy getting outside today! Take a walk, admire a tree, plant one, or support work that keeps forests healthy. Consider a gift to Northern Waters Land Trust and help protect our forests for the future.
