PRESERVING - THE - SACRED - WITHIN - THE - SECULAR

This concept has my mind going to many different places and realms of conversation (like religion, politics, family systems, workplaces, etc.) One place it has gone to recently is Ireland. Two of our Be Still "Regulars" recently returned from an trip to Ireland and shared about their experiences being in a location where the sacred and secular (that is "spiritual stuff" and "ordinary stuff") blend together to create a beautiful culture where despite massive change for various reasons, the sacred seems to have been preserved - respected and continuously brought into - the ever-changing mundane world in which we live.

Perhaps we're able to notice sacred moments in secular spaces, but a deeper question is "how do we preserve those sacred things when they might be threatened by the mundane or temporal (every day/physical life)?

Join us on Sunday for some Celtic Spirituality and stories from Ireland to help us engage in these "thin places" where the spiritual and physical worlds come together and the mystery of it all is more about love than fear. ☘💚

WHAT - GUIDES - YOU - WHEN - YOU'RE - LOST? 🗺

Have you ever seen that meme or quote, "Not all who wander are lost"? I have felt like that sometimes but never really reflected on the deeper question about WHO or WHAT is guiding them through the wandering?

Biblically speaking, many have heard stories about the Israelites "wandering" in the desert for 40 years..... being guided by a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21–22 if you want to look that up). If you're being guided, is it really wandering? Are we really ever directionless?

This week at Be Still Sunday we're going to reflect on spiritual orienteering - the idea that we are walking in this life with God, but also toward God's love in every and any direction. We have senses that tell us when we're headed the right way or straying from the One guiding us out of fear, confusion, anger, apathy, or anything else that doesn't feel like love.

"NATURE - IS - OUR - HOME, - AND - IN - NATURE - WE - ARE - AT - HOME." ⚛

"This strange, multicolored, and astonishing world that we explore – where space is granular, time does not exist, and things are nowhere – is not something that estranges us from our true selves, for this is only what our natural curiosity reveals to us about the place of our dwelling. About the stuff of which we ourselves are made. We are made of the same stardust of which all things are made, and when we are immersed in suffering or when we are experiencing intense joy, we are being nothing other than what we can’t help but be: a part of our world. " (From Seven Brief Lessons on Physics by Carlo Rovelli).

We've been spending a lot of [space]-time contemplating spirituality alongside, or perhaps actually dwelling within, the laws of nature/physics at Be Still Sunday and it has really opened our minds and perhaps our hearts to "see" how science and spirituality coincide and exist so beautifully and mysteriously with one another.

With our collective and individual understanding of these theories and concepts, we are left with a very important question: What difference does learning, understanding, and contemplating these ways of thinking make in how we live our lives? What is our purpose and role in this world?

If you've ever asked similar questions, wondered about "woo woo" things, or just wanted to enjoy being still in the mysterious essence some call God, Be Still Sunday might be the space for you to do that! WHAT - EXACTLY - IS - THE - FLOW - OF - TIME? ⏰

This week at Be Still Sunday, we are picking up where we left off: sort of - if you understand time as a linear construct and if you think time simply stop until you start it up again.

Quantum physics and space/time discussions have led us to understanding the idea of time through thermodynamics - heat transfer, etc. No one at Be Still is an expert here, but we're engaging in some really FAR OUT conversations about spirituality, divinity, and a world we can't see but trust it's there because of these phenomena.

Our guiding lesson this week comes from Carlo Rovelli in his book, "Seven Brief Lessons on Physics." Rovelli writes,

"The difference between past and future exists only when there is heat. The fundamental phenomenon that distinguishes the future from the past is the fact that heat passes from things that are hotter to things that are colder."

In the spiritual/divine realm of things, we use words that denote past and future flow (time) such as, "old life/new life," "transformation," and probably more I'm not thinking of. How might we be experiencing heat from some unknown source that warms our cold hearts, making us new people in Christ, or new people in the Spirit, or new creations?

QUANTUM - LEAPS: TOTALLY - CHANGING - THE - SYSTEM💥

You know, it's funny.... whenever I heard someone refer to something as a "quantum leap," I automatically thoughts of a "GIANT" leap.... a decision, or a transition that was SO very far and much bigger than whatever was. "It was a quantum leap for him to quit that job and accept that other position," or "this is no big deal, we're not making quantum leaps here."

"Quantum" is such a "big" word intellectually that it makes sense why we might make that assumption (or maybe it was just me....). The reality is, a quantum leap - essentially an electron "jumping" from one particle to another" is so very very very small, nearly invisible. Despite its microscopic movement, this activity is so incredibly powerful that it causes GIANT, BIG, SYSTEM-CHANGING things to happen. And the most peculiar thing: these electrons seemingly appear out of nowhere and only show up when they interact with something else.

Be Still Sunday is giving space to reflect on this quantum theory concept as it relates to our lives and our spirituality this week. You won't get a physics lesson from me, I'm not qualified nearly enough - but we will offer space to contemplate the unknowns and bring the idea of quantum leaps into how we respond to occurrences that pop up out of nowhere and change our lives, even if it's for a short time or a season (back to school chaos anyone?!)

Bring your curiosity, your anxiety filled brains, your hope, and your "you-ness" to Be Still on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. to the backyard at in Wales for some coffee, calm, and communion. We can rest together in the wonders of the universe. ✌⚛
