Something special is coming to Pittsburg High School. 💜

We’re honored to officially launch the I Choose ME Program for the 2026–2027 school year.

This isn’t just another after-school program. It’s a space where young women will be challenged to discover who they are, build confidence, develop leadership skills, embrace creativity, and learn what it means to choose themselves every single day.

Meet the women leading this journey:

✨ Sasha Jackson Sasha Jackson – Program Director
✨ La'Keela C Smith La’Keela Smith – Creative Arts Director
✨ Silvina Lopez Silvina Lopez – Co-Facilitator | Beauty & Wellness
✨ Dr. Teffany Mahone Ph.D – Director of Education

Together, we’re creating an experience that blends mentorship, creative expression, academic support, wellness, and sisterhood, because our girls deserve spaces designed to help them thrive.

To the young women joining us this year…

We see your potential.

We believe in your voice.

And we can’t wait to walk alongside you.

Welcome to I Choose ME.

Today is bigger than an event.

Today is about creating space for honest conversations, real connection, and the kind of brotherhood our communities deserve.

Amongst Men was created because too many men are expected to carry everything in silence. Today, we change that.

Whether you’re coming to listen, share, learn, or simply stand in support you belong here.

This afternoon we’ll also open our doors to the entire community as we honor the legacy of our brother Jay Rich James “Jay Rich” Richardson, a man whose impact continues to live on through the people he loved and the lives he touched.

Let’s gather.
Let’s have the conversations that matter.
Let’s honor legacy.
Let’s build community—together.

Community doesn’t happen by chance it happens because people choose to show up.

To every sponsor, partner, and organization that chose to invest in Amongst Men, thank you for believing in the importance of creating spaces where men can be seen, heard, challenged, and supported.

Because of your partnership, we’re able to bring together generations of leaders, fathers, mentors, brothers, and young men for honest conversations that strengthen our community.

This work is bigger than one event. It’s about building a legacy.

We appreciate you for standing with us.

Thank you for helping make Amongst Men possible. 🙏🏽

✨ Team Spotlight: La’Keela Smith ✨

Director of Creative Arts & Youth Development/Education

Since 2022, La’Keela Smith has been an integral part of the Mixed Behavior Foundation family, helping shape the creative vision of our organization while empowering young people through art, storytelling, and self-expression.

A gifted photographer, visual storyteller, mentor, and community advocate, La’Keela’s impact extends far beyond the camera. Through her work, she creates opportunities for young people to build confidence, discover their voice, and see themselves reflected in powerful and meaningful ways.

From I Choose ME: Love Thyself and Project HEAVY to Dear Oakland, A Love Letter to Black Women and numerous community-centered initiatives, La’Keela has consistently shown up with creativity, compassion, and a deep commitment to uplifting others. Her ability to capture authentic moments and transform stories into lasting images has helped bring our mission to life time and time again.

Recognized as one of the Bay Area’s rising creative voices, La’Keela continues to use her talents to inspire, empower, and strengthen the communities we serve. Whether she’s behind the lens, mentoring youth, supporting a project, or helping execute a vision, she leads with excellence, authenticity, and heart.

Her work reminds us that creativity is more than art it’s a pathway to healing, connection, confidence, and transformation.

Thank you, La'Keela C Smith La’Keela Smith | Bay Area Photographer for your leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Mixed Behavior Foundation and the young people we serve. Your impact is felt far beyond the images you capture.

💛 We appreciate you. We celebrate you. We honor your contribution to our mission.

What if the strongest thing a man could do was take off the mask?

This clip talks about Bane’s mask, it’s a great entry way to the conversation of how many men wear masks every day.

The mask of being strong.
The mask of having it all together.
The mask of never being hurt.
The mask of never asking for help.

Sometimes those masks protect us.
Sometimes they isolate us.

As we prepare for Amongst Men, we want to hear from the community:

What is one mask you believe men are expected to wear?

Or what is one thing you wish men felt safe enough to talk about openly?

Drop your thoughts below. Some responses may help shape our discussion on August 1st.

From the MBF Family 🖤
With a heavy heart we mourn our brother..

Jay Rich was more than a friend.
More than a brother.
He was part of the foundation of who we are.

Real loyalty. Real history. Real love.

And when it came to this work

He didn’t just show up… he stood on his word, always!

He spoke with purpose.
He led with heart.
He made sure people felt seen, heard, and understood.

That’s something you can’t teach.
That’s who he was.

We don’t just mourn him
we will continue to carry him.

In every conversation.
Every young man we reach.
Every space we create for healing.

Your name is stamped in this work forever.

Rest in Power, Jay Rich. 🕊️
Long Live You.
