White Pony Express

White Pony Express Fighting food insecurity & food waste in the Bay Area and beyond. Donate or volunteer today! All are high need, many are in crisis, and all are food insecure.

Good nutrition is the backbone of good health and healthy outcomes, especially for marginalized and underserved populations. Despite our county’s overall food abundance, free or affordable food is not available to residents with low levels of income. Many residents live in food deserts, which don’t have stores that offer fresh produce or nutrient-rich food. WPE strives to level the playing field f

or individuals and families who have been left behind by circumstances beyond their control. The majority of the 120,000 people per year that we serve need emergency food. WPE breaks this cycle of malnutrition and associated chronic health and psychological issues. We partner with restaurants, grocery stores, farmers markets, agricultural operations, and other food producers to rescue fresh, high-quality food and redistribute it to more than 90 partners, including schools, assisted living facilities, and shelters. While food rescue is the cornerstone of our organization, our reach doesn’t stop there. We take a multi-pronged approach, operating numerous programs, including School Pantries, a General Store that provides high-quality clothing and essential items, and a Food Is Medicine initiative that matches community members with medical issues to the appropriate dietary needs and nutrition. WPE is known as an organization that delivers without fail, which is owing to the inspirational work of our 400+ volunteers, who are the lifeblood of our operation. Since we were founded in 2013, our team has rescued and donated over 20 million meals and over 1 million articles of clothing, shoes, and other essentials. Together our programs touch over 120,000 lives each year through a circle of giving that uplifts us all and never ends. From sorting donations to helping with deliveries, running our General Store, and even donating vehicles or equipment, we’re always excited to welcome new members to the WPE community. Meet Jorge. He's been at Downer Elementary since 2015 when White Pony Express opened our 1st School Pantry.
In his own words: "I see the families smiling when they come and shop. That's a couple of dollars they save. Money's tight, and it gets tighter – everything's going up except your salary. All this food we get here helps them a lot."
Eleven years and thousands of thriving families later – this is what "Love, Delivered" looks like. This month, we're raising $100,000 to sustain all 23 School Pantry sites and serve the communities still waiting for one.

August is ‘Make a Will Month’ and volunteers and supporters are ensuring their legacies live on through White Pony Express.

Peter and Mary Brooks are among our earliest volunteers and financial donors. Peter had this to say about their decision:

"It feels good to support something that I love, but as I've reflected on my aging process, I have wondered, 'Where will my support for WPE come from when I'm no longer here?' My wife Mary is a financial advisor, and we put our heads together. We decided to include WPE in our estate plan in several ways. In my case, the simplest was to make WPE the beneficiary of a secondary life insurance policy that I have had for many years. Mary has chosen to designate her IRA for charitable purposes and included WPE as a beneficiary. Another idea we considered is setting up a Donor Advised Fund."

When you include White Pony Express in your financial or estate planning, you ensure our mission continues to thrive for generations to come. Like Mary and Peter, your legacy gift is the seed that helps WPE meet the growing need and nurtures our communities for years after it's planted.

A few years ago, a group of volunteers from Moss Adams walked through our doors ready to sort produce and pack food for their neighbors. This week, they were back — same smiling faces, same steady hands, just under a new name: Baker Tilly US. Companies change, mergers happen, logos get updated... but the commitment these volunteers have shown to Contra Costa families hasn't wavered one bit. We're so glad to call them long-time partners in this work. Thank you for showing up, year after year!

WPE is featured in the Citi Foundation's report on the Global to scale food security globally.
The initiative, launched in 2023, supports innovative solutions to this pressing global issue — including WPE's Food Rescue Hero Initiative built around our mobile app that connects surplus food directly to volunteer runners and nonprofit recipients.
Over two years, the app alone powered over 8,900 food rescues & deliveries, the equivalent of 1.1 million meals.
It enabled one of our current food runner volunteers, Sylvia, to move from a recipient, reliant on WPE to feed her family, to a teammate now responsible for delivering food to thousands of people.
Read the report to learn about the Global Innovation Challenge and WPE's work turning surplus into sustenance.

🍊🍋 The Democrats of Rossmoor recently volunteered and made cheerful work of pallets of surplus fruit headed out across Contra Costa County. But the sweetness doesn't stop there: White Pony Express is one of a select few organizations the Democrats of Rossmoor are sponsoring this year. A group with this much energy putting real support behind our mission? That's about as sweet as it gets. Thank you, Rose, Susan, and the whole Rossmoor crew.
