"Change is always happening in our communities. The real question is “What does it take to be part of change that is real, lasting, and rooted in the people who live it every day?”
Being part of that kind of change takes time and consistency. It means showing up over and over and staying in relationship with the people who are most directly impacted by the change. It also means being there before things happen, showing that you’re invested in the dreams, concerns, and goals of the community you’re in relationship with.
But what does it mean to show up? It means being fully present in community. It means recognizing that you want to do things in partnership. It means recognizing that residents are experts in their own experience and that as guests, we’ve had the privilege of being invited into conversations, meetings, and the storytelling that takes place long before visible change. Showing up shows that relationships and partnerships matter. When relationships are centered, neighbors become centered too. Their voices, ideas, and lived experiences are not brought in after decisions have already been made but are part of shaping the direction from the beginning. That’s what makes change feel more grounded, sustainable, and reflective of the community itself...."
