Meet Lee Scheffe, Program Manager for the Waco FEC.
Lee manages the Waco Financial Empowerment Center, opening October 2026 to offer free, one-on-one financial counseling to our neighbors. Growing up in Austin, Lee watched neighborhoods change shape fast, some displaced, others prospering. That's what drew him to this work: done right, community development builds resilient, thriving places instead of displacement.
Beyond the FEC, Lee lights up talking about Spring/Fall into Action twice a year, staff, neighbors, volunteers, and code enforcement team up to mow, haul junk, and clear debris from properties across Waco. He says it's a day full of hugs, tears, coolers of Gatorade, and hope.
Lee wants folks to know supporting Grassroots isn't just financial: contracting local builders, buying supplies from local businesses, partnering with social service agencies. There are many ways to plug in, and any staff member would love to help you find yours.
Outside of work, Lee travels, reads, bikes, runs, and plays the piano. Fun fact: he's been to 44 US states. His Waco go-tos: Pinewood for coffee, Brazos Park East for walks, Cameron Park for biking, Ranchito #5, and Southern Roots or Brotherwell for trivia.
Though he's from Austin, Lee calls Waco home and says it's a privilege to be surrounded by such kind, energetic people at work and in the community.
