🎃 Fall Fun & Community Connections 🎃

Our Community Support Program has been making the most of these beautiful fall days with some fun adventures in the community!

Our participants enjoyed a visit to Douds Orchard and The Pumpkin Post where they picked out their very own pumpkins that they could take back to Arc to paint!

They also had the opportunity to visit the North Manchester Police and Fire Station! Everyone loved learning more about the important roles these departments play in keeping our community safe. Visits like these provide valuable opportunities to learn, ask questions, build relationships, and connect with the people who serve our community every day.

A special THANK YOU to Officer Ryan Skeens and Fireman Cody Meeks for their warm hospitality and for taking the time to give us a tour of the departments. We appreciate you making our visit so welcoming, informative, and memorable!

We are so thankful for the opportunities our community provides and for all the wonderful people who make these experiences possible!

✨Celebrating Value & Talent - Meet Robert ✨

Robert began working with the Arc Community Employment Program in April 2025 during his junior year at Huntington North High School. The summer between his junior and senior years, he worked at the Viking Grab & Go, a student-run café and culinary program hosted by Pathfinder Services featuring students from Huntington North High School. This experience contributed to his desire to work in a setting where he could assist customers. Robert graduated Huntington North High School in May 2026 and actively began to search for employment. With the help of his Employment Specialist at the Arc, he was able to obtain a job at Arby’s in September 2026. Robert’s duties include greeting guests, taking orders, operating the cash register, and maintaining cleanliness of the restaurant.

During a recent site visit, Robert’s Employment Specialist observed Robert’s impressive ability to remain calm during busy periods and interact with customers both professionally and positively during peak business hours.

✨National Disability Employment Awareness - Meet Thomas ✨

Today we’re celebrating the value, talent, and unique contributions that Thomas brings to his community and workplace!

Thomas is a natural helper who is always willing to lend a hand whenever someone needs it. Whether he’s helping his family around the farm by feeding the animals or pitching in with yardwork, Thomas takes pride in being helpful. He also loves interacting with people, is full of conversation, and truly doesn’t know a stranger!

These wonderful qualities made Thomas a natural fit as a Team Member at Family Farm and Home in Peru, Indiana, where he has been working for the past year! His friendly personality, willingness to help, and love for connecting with others make him a valuable part of the team.

Thomas’s story is a wonderful reminder that individuals with disabilities bring meaningful skills, dedication, and unique strengths to the workplace. When employers recognize talent and create opportunities for everyone, individuals can thrive, businesses benefit, and communities grow stronger.

The Arc Wabash County is seeking a Director of Employment Programs and Services to build on our success and lead the way in expanding vocational opportunities for people with disabilities.

The Arc WC is a recognized leader in employment and vocational training, providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop skills, achieve their goals, and experience greater independence. We are looking for an experienced, qualified leader who will continue this tradition of excellence while helping shape the future of our employment programs and services.

This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position ($50,000-$58,000) with benefits that requires a high level of commitment and demonstrated skills in leadership, advocacy, management and supervision, compliance, and customer service. Only experienced, qualified applicants will be considered.

The Director of Employment Programs and Services (DEPS) will oversee all of The Arc’s employment programs, services, microbusinesses, and entrepreneurship initiatives, while providing leadership and supervision to departmental staff. The Director will also represent The Arc Wabash County through interactions with the public, customers, families, and community partners.

The ideal candidate will excel at multitasking and thrive in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating strong self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and social intelligence. Applicants must possess initiative, organizational skills, and a visible leadership presence, with a strong commitment to quality, empathy, and the person-centered delivery of programs and services.

Soaking Up this October Sunshine at the Zoo 🌞

Participants in our Community Support Program took advantage of this beautiful October weather by exploring the Fort Wayne Children’s zoo one day last week! Everyone had a great time seeing and learning about the various animals, their habitats, what they eat, and how they survive in the wild.

💙💛 Hats Off for Inclusion! 💛💙

We topped off Down Syndrome Awareness Week by wearing our favorite hats to celebrate “Hats Off for Inclusion!”

But what does true inclusion look like for individuals with Down Syndrome?

Inclusion is about so much more than simply being present. It means creating opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome to participate, contribute, build relationships, and thrive in every area of life.

True inclusion means…
🔸 Seeing abilities, not limitations. Recognizing each person's unique strengths, talents, interests, and potential.
🔸 Creating opportunities. Making sure individuals have access to education, employment, recreation, and community activities.
🔸 Building meaningful friendships. Encouraging genuine connections and relationships, not just inviting someone to participate, but making them feel like they belong.
🔸 Listening and respecting choices. Valuing each person's voice, preferences, and right to make decisions about their own life.
🔸 Celebrating differences. Understanding that everyone learns, communicates, and experiences the world differently, and that those differences make our communities stronger.

Individuals with Down syndrome have dreams, goals, talents, and so much to contribute. When we move beyond awareness and embrace acceptance, opportunity, and belonging, we help create a world where everyone has the chance to shine!
