The DOVE Project Ending Domestic Violence - Empowering Survivors. [email protected]
www.vashondoveproject.org It was well supported by the community and was thriving.

The DOVE Project was started by locals to address the need for domestic violence support services on Vashon-Maury Island, Washington. Our goal is to provide information and resources across the Island to help survivors access services when and where they need them. We believe that this is the key to empowerment and survival. The DoVE Project also actively engages in community education on domestic violence and educational programs for teens to promote healthy relationships right from the start. The DOVE Project serves approximately 75 individuals yearly. HISTORY:
Original research conducted by the Vashon Healthy Community Network and an ad-hoc Domestic Violence Taskforce indicated that, like everywhere, Vashon is not immune to domestic violence. Without services available on the Island, survivors’ needs were not being met. In early 2000, an organization called Island Domestic Violence Outreach Service (IDVOS) was providing quality domestic violence services on Vashon Island, Washington. The organization imploded in a scandal that shook the Island - the Executive Director was charged and convicted of embezzling money. At that time, approximately 75 individuals per year were receiving services. IDVOS closed in 2005. In 2006, DAWN, a domestic violence service provider serving South King County, was asked by the County Executive to step in and provide services. They did so for two years, serving 75 individuals in their last year on Vashon. They were unable to continue due to insufficient funding from King County. It was an inefficient service model to send an advocate from Seattle to Vashon. Data from King County showed that fewer than 15 Islanders received services through off-Island King County providers. The reason for this decline is simple: survivors cannot easily evade their abusers long enough to leave Vashon to access services and the ferry system is cost prohibitive. The timeline of service provision illustrates succinctly that for Vashon Island survivors, services had to be provided on-Island to be effective. As it was too costly for DAWN to provide services here, it is also too costly for Islanders to commute via ferry for services.

Wow! What a night.
Together, we raised $185,000 at Share Hope Fundraising Gala!

This year’s theme, “The Threads That Connect Us,” celebrated the connections that make our community strong. Our guests, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community partners brought that spirit to life through their generosity and care.

Your support helps DOVE provide vital services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and prevention education that builds healthier relationships and a safer Vashon.

Here are a few highlights from an evening filled with connection, purpose, and hope. Thank you to all who were a part of it! 📸💜

💜 It’s time for this week’s Lunchboxes conversation!

Last week, we asked middle school students what boundaries are and what boundaries they set for themselves.

Together, we explored how boundaries help us maintain healthy relationships, as well as create space when we need it. Boundaries communicate our needs and guide our own behavior and choices.

Now we’d love to hear from you:
What is one boundary you set for yourself that helps you care for yourself or maintain a healthy relationship

Share in the comments if you feel comfortable.

1 in 4 women in the U.S. has experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in her lifetime.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re highlighting how deeply violence affects our communities—and why supporting survivors matters.

At The DOVE Project, we believe everyone deserves to be safe, respected, and free from abuse. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, we are here to offer support.

Have you noticed the purple ribbons around Vashon?

Each October, The DOVE Project places these ribbons around town for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This annual tradition brings awareness to domestic violence, honors survivors, and reminds us that everyone deserves to feel safe in their relationships.

Each ribbon carries a message: You are not alone. You deserve support. Our community cares.

Join the community in wearing a purple ribbon provided at local businesses.

We believe survivors💜

Small questions can start meaningful conversations. 💜

Introducing Lunchbox Wednesdays! Each week, DOVE’s Lunchboxes program invites middle school students to explore questions about healthy relationships, boundaries, consent, reproductive health, and more—with a fruit snack for participating!

Now, we’re bringing those conversations to our community, and we’d love to hear from you.

This week’s question: As we transition into fall, how are you taking care of yourself? How are you showing up for friends and loved ones as they navigate changes, too?
