When people think about adult literacy, they usually think about tutoring. That is part of it, but there is a lot more that goes into helping a student get started and keep moving forward.
When someone comes to CCVL, we start by talking through what they want help with and what goals they are working toward. From there, we may complete intake and assessment, look at their current skill level, and figure out what kind of support and resources would be the best fit.
Not every student starts in the same place, and not every student has the same barriers. Some need in-person support with a volunteer tutor. Some need materials they can work on at home. Some benefit from guided online curriculum they can continue between meetings, especially when transportation, work schedules, or other responsibilities make it harder to come in regularly.
That is one of the ways donor support helps.
Financial support helps us purchase learning materials, maintain curriculum and program licenses, and provide resources students can use based on their starting point, goals, and availability. It helps us make sure learning can continue, even when meeting in person every time is not realistic.
There is a lot of work behind the scenes, but it matters because it helps us provide support that is practical, flexible, and useful for the adults we serve.
