First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to Jordan Thomas in the UFO car, she was spun out in a minor accident when another driver slammed into the back of her at full speed, resulting in an injury. No update on her condition at this time.
Secondly, this video shows a prime example of why our services are needed! The EMS crew did NOT handle this situation appropriately and could have easily resulted in a much more serious injury!
We train track officials, local EMS, and even local fire departments on the proper way of handling these situations.
This race car should have had the sheet metal cut back, and the driver very carefully lifted onto a backboard with the neck brace, and transported to the hospital for evaluation. However, tonight's incident didn't go that way. EMS were playing on there phones, had the radio the track gave them turned all the way down, when a official finally got there attention to tell them they were needed, the pulled forward 10 yards and stopped, and began looking around to figure out where they were needed, and the track official literally had to go back to the EMS crew and point it out to them. Then they took there sweet time getting to the scene, once on scene the paramedic began talking to the driver and then pulls her out the window after placing a C collar on her, once she was loaded and headed to the pit entrance, EMS calls for another ambulance to respond "routine" and it took over 30 minutes for the second ambulance to show up. That is NOT how this should have unfolded at all! I pray this track will allow us to come in and train them the proper way, on how to handle these situations!
