✨ Meet Our Child Advocate! ✨

Melanie plays an important role in supporting children and families who have been impacted by domestic violence. This position focuses on helping out kids feel safe, supported, and heard while providing age-appropriate advocacy and connecting families with the resources they may need.

We are excited to introduce you to our Child Advocate and give you the opportunity to learn more about the person behind this important role!

"Hi, I’m Melanie. My background has always been centered around children and families. I’ve spent many years working in child welfare. I’ve even been a foster parent myself. These experiences have shaped how I see this work and why protecting children is so important to me.

I believe every child deserves the chance to overcome their circumstances and, more than anything, to know that someone believes in them. A big part of my work is also supporting mothers in building life skills, coping tools, and confidence they may not have had the chance to develop. When we support parents, we also help change outcomes for their children and break cycles for the next generation."

With decades of experience in law enforcement and domestic violence response, Lt. Wynn will share his knowledge and perspective with professionals who play a critical role in responding to domestic violence, strangulation, and sexual assault.

Meet Our New Shelter Manager!

We’re excited to introduce you Sam, one of the people behind the scenes at The Haven. Our Shelter Manager plays an important role in creating a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

From supporting our residents to helping keep our shelter running day-to-day, her work is an essential part of our mission to provide safety to those in our community.

Here is more from Sam herself:
“I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and recently made the exciting move to Valdosta, Georgia, with my fiancé. I’m passionate about health, fitness, and living an active lifestyle, and I’m always up for a new adventure. Whether I’m working out, enjoying the outdoors, taking a long walk, or going for a scenic drive, I love staying active and making the most of life.
I’m also a huge dog lover and proud dog mom to my 7-year-old Pitbull, Dunkin, who is truly my fur baby and an important part of my family.
Professionally, I recently graduated with a double master's degree in health administration and business administration. I’ve dedicated much of my life to helping others, and I’m passionate about continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me.
Outside of work and fitness, I’m a proud Steelers fan who loves spending quality time with my friends and family. I value meaningful connections, new experiences, and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. I’m excited for this new chapter in Valdosta and all the adventures and opportunities that come with it!”

The Haven has presented the Jeanette Coody Community Service Award every year as a way to honor an agency that exemplifies the kind of service and commitment to the community that Jeanette herself demonstrated. This year, the award goes to America's Home Place!

America's Home Place has dedicated their time, resources, and financial support. Not just one of these categories, but all of them. They have pressure-washed our building and helped all year long with the upkeep of the facility. Their team has consistently shown up for our organization and the individuals and families we serve. This support has made a lasting impact.

We are grateful for community partners who understand the importance of coming together to support those who need it most. America’s Home Place has truly demonstrated what it means to invest in our community.

Today was a truly special day as we celebrated the ribbon-cutting and opening of the Jeanette Newbern Coody Valdosta Community Shelter! 🏡💜

Mrs. Jeanette has spent countless years pouring her heart into The Haven and the Valdosta community, advocating for those who need a safe place, and helping create a more compassionate community for everyone.

The naming of this shelter in her honor reflects the lasting impact she has made through her generosity, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our community. Her legacy is now part of a place that will provide safety and hope to so many people for years to come.

Congratulations to Ana!

Ana has been an intern with The Haven since May 2025. This is her last week before she is officially awarded her Master of Social Work- Individual and Family Clinical Concentration.

Today we’re celebrating not only the incredible accomplishment of earning her Master of Social Work, but also the compassionate and hardworking person behind that degree.

It was such a privilege to have you as an intern at The Haven and to watch you grow both personally and professionally. You brought so much compassion, empathy, and genuine care to the work you did with survivors. You will be missed, Ana!
