Children with congenital heart disease who require pulmonary valve replacement may now have the possibility of fewer open-heart surgeries as they grow. The newly FDA-approved AUTUS size-adjustable valve is a first-of-its-kind device that can be expanded over time through a minimally invasive transcatheter procedure.

At , Dr. Oliver Barry, a pediatric interventional cardiologist, and Dr. Emile Bacha, surgeon-in-chief, helped advance the research demonstrating the valve’s clinical outcomes. Their work supported a breakthrough that could improve long-term care and quality of life for pediatric patients.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month. We at MHI recognize that the loss of a life, at any age, should be recognized and remembered. In the CHD Community, we honor and cherish our heart warriors, of all ages, who have gone too soon.

We invite you to join us in “A Wave of Light,” tomorrow, October 15th at 7 PM. This is a global initiative. Everyone participating is asked to light a candle, or share a candle virtually on social media, at 7 PM in YOUR time zone, and leave that candle burning for ONE hour. The wave of light will spread, hour by hour, across the globe. As one light burns out, the next will be lit. We encourage all members of the heart community to share the light in honor of a loved one lost, or to share the light in support of a family who has suffered a loss.

Exciting news!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved a size-adjustable pulmonary heart valve for pediatric patients —the first heart valve designed to be expanded after surgery to keep pace with a child’s growth.

This innovative technology may help reduce the need for repeat open-heart surgeries for children with heart defects.

This is especially exciting for our Heart Center team since our co-directors, Dr. Aimee Armstrong and Dr. Stephanie Fuller, both have extensive experience with this new FDA-approved, size-adjustable pulmonary valve replacement, and Dr. Armstrong was the first to perform an expansion of this implanted valve.

Today is World Mental Health Day. 💚🧠

When we talk about congenital heart disease (CHD), mental health is not always part of the conversation, but it should be.

Living with CHD can bring a lot of uncertainty, stress, and anxiety, not only for the person diagnosed but for their entire family.

Parents often carry the emotional weight of medical decisions, hospitalizations, and the unknown. Siblings are affected, too, even when they may not fully understand or express what they are feeling.

The emotional impact of CHD is real, and it can continue long after a hospital stay ends.

Mental health deserves to be part of the conversation when we talk about caring for children and families affected by CHD. ❤️

Hurricane Isaias Update 🌀 | Thursday, October 8, 2026

There has been no significant change overnight in the expected impacts for Lowndes County. Hurricane Isaias continues to strengthen in the Gulf, but the current forecast does not indicate a significant threat to Lowndes County. We will continue monitoring the system as it moves inland Friday night into Saturday.

🌧 Heavy rainfall and localized flooding remain our primary concerns, with the heaviest rain expected Friday into Saturday. Current forecasts indicate 2–4 inches of rain, with locally higher totals possible.
🌪 Isolated tornadoes are possible, particularly Friday night into Saturday.
💨 Gusty winds are possible, but significant tropical-storm-force winds are not currently the primary concern for our area.

We’ll continue monitoring closely with our friends at the US National Weather Service Tallahassee Florida, and provide updates when they are avaiable.

Stay aware. Stay prepared. Don’t panic.
