Music of Remembrance Press: Music from the Holocaust era is balanced with contemporary, Holocaust-inspired compositions.

Music of Remembrance (MOR) is a Seattle-based performing arts organization dedicated to addressing questions of human rights and social justice through the transformative power of music. Since our inaugural year, MOR has presented two mainstage concert programs annually at Seattle's Benaroya Hall, marking the anniversary of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) each fall, and Holocaust Remembrance Day each spring. Introduced by Mina Miller, these mainstage programs combine serious vocal and chamber music with works in popular cabaret and traditional folk styles. In our first decade, we presented nine commissioned premieres of Holocaust-inspired works and seventeen world premieres, and produced four CDs. In December 2008, MOR toured to Los Angeles, presenting the California premiere of our commission by composer Jake Heggie, For a Look or a Touch. Sparks of Glory, MOR's musical witness outreach series, is presented free to the public each season, and attracts an audience largely new to chamber music and this musical legacy. Thanks to our commitment to rediscovering forgotten works by Holocaust-era musicians and to performing contemporary pieces and commissions, Sparks of Glory has been funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and Chamber Music America. These 90-minute concerts-with-commentary form the heart of MOR's educational outreach program, which reaches almost 2,000 high school and college students annually in the greater Seattle area.

For your GRAMMY® consideration: The Dialogue of Memories.

This one-act opera by composer Tom Cipullo, with libretto by Howard Reich with Tom Cipullo, tells Reich's own story. The son of two Holocaust survivors, Reich watched his mother struggle with ghosts of her past, and carried the memory of events he never experienced. Reich found a path to understanding and hope through conversations with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel during the final years of Wiesel's life.

This opera brings their journey to life with lyrical beauty and emotional honesty, a call for compassion that feels urgent today.

🎶 West Coast Premiere

In 1944, 1,000 refugees from 18 countries arrived at Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York, the only U.S. shelter for refugees fleeing Europe during WWII.

Their stories come to life in “We Go On, Oswego.” Mezzo-soprano Lily Bogas makes her MOR debut with three songs from the cycle: one on learning a new language, one on the limits of U.S. refugee policy, and one on a young girl finding her way in America.

Our season opens with JOURNEYS 🌍🎶

⛵ Five child refugees, from Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Vietnam and N**i Germany, crossing treacherous seas in search of safety. Youth performers tell their stories in Sahba Aminikia’s “Stormy Seas.”

🚂 Steve Reich’s “Different Trains,” honoring his 90th birthday. A boy rides between his parents across the U.S. while, in the same years, trains carry Europe’s Jews to a very different fate.

🏠 “We Go On, Oswego:” three women who found shelter in the only WWII refugee camp in the U.S.

🎻 George Walker’s “Lyric,” a soulful tribute to his grandmother, who escaped slavery.

Stories of migration, exile, and the search for a place to call home.
