“I learned from Elvis to move while I was onstage. Most singers, when they go onstage, grip the microphone with both hands and just concentrate on what sound they’re making. They are not really thinking about doing body movement. Elvis did. He was doing those moves that a lot of people would be scared to do. A lot of performers would think, “I shouldn’t do this. It might look silly.” He didn’t care. He just did what felt natural. I did the same thing. I thought, “I want to go out there and do what I feel is natural for me.” It worked. Yeah, I really got the whole idea from watching Elvis.”

“Elvis had such a keen ear. He could listen to a song once or twice, and he knew it. But he had his own ideas. He was picking these songs, all these big monster hits, and he was always right. So after awhile what could we tell him? We couldn’t tell him what to record; we’d have been crazy. He had the reins. Whatever he wanted to record, that was it.

He picked “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog,”—a whole string of big hits.”
