Today is Veterans Day!
Celebrated annually on November 11, Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day in that it is set aside to honor all those who have served, whether in wartime or peacetime, with a focus on living veterans (as opposed to in remembrance of those who’ve passed). As many members know, Veterans Day was not always known by this name. It was originally Armistice Day, the day we celebrated the end of World War I: November 11, 1918. In 1954, nearly a decade after World War II ended and a year after the Korean War ceasefire, President Eisenhower signed a bill to change the name to Veterans Day in honor of American veterans of all wars/conflicts. The date was moved around a few times in the decades to follow, but in 1979, President Gerald Ford signed a law returning the celebration to its original date, Armistice Day, under the name Veterans Day.
How is your Auxiliary celebrating our brave service members this Veterans Day? Let us know in the comments! And if you have pictures, please email them to us at [email protected] – we would love to feature your Auxiliary and celebrate your veterans throughout this November.
