In this series, we will be interviewing members of our Urban Forestry Group and their favorite native trees! ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› Meet Nicole, Nicole Gillett, Urban Forestry Program Manager Tucson Million Trees for the City of Tucson. โœจ (pictured with a Texas Ebony grown in our greenhouse)

๐Ÿฅ‡What is your favorite tree and why did you pick it as your favorite?

My favorite trees changes every season or maybe even every hour, but right now Iโ€™m loving the deep evergreen shade under a Texas ebony or Ebenopsis ebano.

โœจAre there qualities about this tree that you would like to share?

This near cousin tree comes to use from the Sierra Madres, eastern Mexico and southern Texas. The incredible deep green of the leaves, overlapping branches and dense growth of this tree gift us with a rare complete shade in our hot, hot desert. Texas ebony is a real beauty queen with patterned bark and lovely yellow follows.

โœ…Are there any fun facts about this tree?

Treat your ebony to a little extra water and she can get up to 20 or even 30 feet tall, or trust her desert nature and she will grow short, dense and protective. Her seed pods are incredibly strong and when dry shake with the music of the edible seeds inside. Texas ebony do great in our yards, placed in a location where deep all year shade can give refuge.

Thank you Texas ebony for the rest in the shade, Iโ€™ll carry your seeds pods with me!ย ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒžAnd thank you Nicole for sharing all these qualities about the Texas Ebony!๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

โœจThank you Desert Alchemist for leading us into the woods to forage and identify both poisonous and edible mushrooms. We learned so much as a crew, alongside our little ones! ๐Ÿซ€

As we forage, we DO NOT over-harvest or strip an area bare. Plants and fungi need to continue to spread its seed to survive. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ

๐ŸŒžItโ€™s been a hot summer yaโ€™ll! With the heat, our plants and trees need extra water to make it through!๐Ÿฅ€

โœจToday, our Greenhouse Manager Maya maya โ˜€๏ธ is teaching us how to identify drought stressed trees! โœจ

What to look for in a tree:
๐Ÿค’ Symptoms of drought-related stress in such as:
โ€ขwilting or drooping leaves
โ€ขconsistent browning of the canopy ๐Ÿ‚
โ€ขleaf drop
โ€ขslowed or stunted growth

How to fix it!:
๐Ÿ’ฆWATER WATER WATER๐Ÿ’ง
Deep watering to adequately hydrate the root zone will prevent and reverse most cases of drought or heat related stress.
Young or newly planted trees may require more frequent watering during establishment, while larger, more established trees will require infrequent but very deep soaks.

๐Ÿ‘€Remember to always consult with a knowledgeable tree professional to find out the best ways to support your trees! ๐ŸŒณ
