n animal in need. With your help and support, N.B.S. Animal Rescue will continue to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of homeless, abandoned, abused, neglected, and forgotten animals in need. We focus our rescue efforts on pulling dogs from kill shelters in Michigan. We hope to help reduce the euthanasia rates in Michigan by approaching rescue from this angle. We ask you to please email us with any dogs that are currently in need as opposed to posting on our Facebook Wall. There are many, many animals in need everyday and we want our supporters to be able to follow our daily activities simply and easily.

Thank you Marie for your Memorial Donation in honor of Lena.

Lena was a dog that Marie offered to foster and pulled from the shelter for NBS Animal Rescue. She ended up being in very rough shape upon intake. She was mostly deaf, with a raging ear infection. She had an upper respiratory infection that took over a month to completely kick. Severe dental disease, hernia, cyst on her back... Despite all this, Marie saw the beauty that was there. She nursed her back to health and then could not let her leave. Lena got to spend her last year getting spoiled and snuggled, taking a trip to Florida, and enjoying life. If you couldn't find Lena in the house, you had to look no further than the nearest warm laundry basket :-) Sadly, symptoms of heart failure came on swiftly and she was taken from us sooner than expected. Her memory lives on, and she will not be forgotten.

Thank you Dana and Joe for your Memorial Donation in Honor of Izzy. We sincerely understand how hard it is to lose one of our beloved pets so unexpectedly and before we are ready for them to go.

"We adopted Izzy in March 2013. She was the alpha Pom leader in our household. A feisty, affectionate and sweet Pomeranian. Unfortunately she had an undiagnosed heart condition and passed away in late March 2019. We love Izzy, she is my ❤️ dog, i miss my little pom shadow."

Hey , meet one of our newer dogs to the rescue, Miko. He's been with us for a few months with no serious interest yet. We could really use some help getting his profile shared!

He is a great dog that bonds strongly and loves his people. His only caveat is that he has some definite "stranger danger" that we've been working on. He would be best suited for a home that doesn't have a ton of frequent new visitors. He is learning to trust new people, but it is a process, and he will do a barking charge (bluffing) until he gets to know you and is fed a few treats. We don't hold his past and lack of socialization against him and hope that we can find the perfect home for him.

Meet Miko, an Adult Male Terrier currently available for adoption at NBS Animal Rescue. Could this be your new best friend? Learn more and apply today!

We’d like you to finally meet Levi! He’s had a long road to get to where he is now. You see, when he first arrived to the shelter, he was so matted that he could not defecate. He basically just laid on his side on the shelter floor. The shelter staff was able to give him some relief if removing the matted and crusted fur from his butt…. But it took some skin with it as well and left him with a wound. In good news, he was finally able to go to the bathroom and resume eating. We agreed to take on his care and got an appointment with our friends at Scrubbers Self-Serve Dog Wash & Professional Grooming in Royal Oak the next day to shave the rest of the matted fur from his body. We did notice that he walked a bit funny, and assumed it was due to the tightness of his mats pulling on his skin between his legs and belly. Once he was shaved and more comfortable, we were able to make a better assessment of Levi. We suspected he had at least 1 bad patella, causing his kneecap to slide out of place. An appointment with Dr Wilson confirmed, he had 2 luxating patellas that would require surgery to repair and give him the best function. Being a young fella, he would heal well, so we scheduled the bi-lateral surgery at the soonest available date. Levi did amazing, but the lengthy surgery did not allow them to neuter him at the same time, as we hoped. His 2 week and 4 week recheck appointments went well and his mobility has been great. Finally, we were able to schedule him a spa day with his newly grown out fur and for his neuter so that he could be ready for adoption.

Levi is an amazing 3 year old Toy poodle. He’s spunky, affectionate, and smart… but also a bit noisy. He’s found his little bark and will bark at strange noises outside, squirrels, birds, etc. He is doing great with his potty training, and loves to explore in his fenced yard, regardless of the weather! Because of his initial condition and surgeries, and the weather, he has not been well practiced on a leash. Due to this, we are looking for a special home for him. It must not be a condo or apartment that his barking could disrupt, and he would love to have a fenced yard where his owner can watch him explore. He is good with other dogs that aren’t overbearing and pushy. He has met a couple cats and seems not to mind them either. If you think this 6.5lb handsome boy is the perfect fit for you, please visit our website to fill out an adoption application at www.nbsar.org

Whenever we have an available foster family, we love to help pull a dog in need from our friends at Detroit Animal Care and Control. They take in a staggering 6000+ animals per year. We were honored to be able to offer a loving foster home to a little matted poodle who was locked in a bathroom with two other dogs abandoned by her previous owner after the family moved out, leaving a fourth deceased dog in a trash bag on the curb. 😡

When one of our volunteers went down to pick up this precious little lady after her hold time was up, he found her with a new significant injury to her neck. It's possible that she got her head stuck in the opening between her two kennels, resulting in the injury. We want to thank the staff at DACC who jumped into action to help get her pain medication so she could be as comfortable as possible on our way to Wilson Veterinary Hospital.

Due to the extensive injury to her neck, coupled with her upper respiratory infection, Ari was hospitalized for a week so that she could receive IV medications and have her wounds cleaned and cared for under anesthesia every other day. Her final bill ended up being over $2700.

We want to send a huge thank you to our friends at Animal Resource Funding Foundation for their generous donation of $700 to help cover a portion of Ari's medical bills at Wilson's.

In even better news - Ari found a wonderful new foster mom who loves her very much, and is planning on adopting her after her upcoming spay surgery!
