β€œAt Main Street America, we believe that supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses builds community wealth and a culture of innovation – yet, far too often, this vision isn’t realized due to a variety of factors, including lack of access to resources and funding,” said Erin Barnes, President and CEO, Main Street America. β€‹β€œThis is why we are so proud to partner with American Express on a program that provides meaningful support to small business owners working to strengthen their livelihoods and their communities.”

β€œSmall businesses play a vital role in our communities,” said Jennifer Skyler, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, American Express. β€‹β€œThe Shop Small Grants Program builds on our longstanding commitment to small businesses, which began with Small Business Saturday, by putting meaningful investment behind the people and places that drive local impact.”

We’re especially proud that our Kansas Main Street businesses are part of this initiative, and to join a network of over 500 small businesses across the country β€” made possible by investments like this grant that empower small businesses to keep moving forward.

The Fox Theater in Hutchinson KS is great example to visit for Preservation Month. The community chose to invest in this historic Art Deco asset. Historic theaters like this exist on Kansas Main Streets all over the state. What theater would you like to see preserved?

We head back to Great Bend for our next Preservation Month post. 2105-2107 Forest Avenue is another great preservation save. The building, now known as The Landing was missing the entire east wall after the demolition of an adjacent building. The new wall was the canvas for a new mural by muralist Arcy and features B-29 bombers. The building has been converted to housing and will soon have a restaurant on the first floor. The project used Kansas Main Street design services as well as historic tax credits to help accomplish this great save. Be sure to swipe to see the before photo and KMS rendering.

We chose Preservation Month to feature David and Kristi Wilson, who have been on a twenty year journey to bring back the historic Shay building on a prominent corner of Sterling Kansas Main Street. They have been methodically rehabbing the outside and first floor of the building using historic tax credits and preservation grants. The ROOMS grant program finally allowed them to do a whole building fire suppression system and begin tackling rehabbing apartments on the second floor. The first three apartments that are nearing completion are part of the ROOMS grant and they plan to move into one of those apartments while completing the fourth apartment. They will ultimately move into the fourth and final apartment when the last phase of work is complete.

For Preservation Month we are going to share a composite photo of the A.S. Allen Building at 1401 Main in Great Bend, Kansas. As you can see this building has had many lives and many storefronts over the years. In 2017, the present owners decided to embark on a journey to reverse some of the many horrors that have been done to this building. The worst of these was a 1970s metal mansard roof that covered 2/3 of the front of the building. In 2023 Kansas Main Street was involved and with some design services and some Historic Tax Credits a dramatic transformation took place!
