They may sound harmless, but words can carry a lot of meaning.
A woman who chooses adoption isn’t simply “giving away” her child. She is making a significant decision about her child’s future.

The way we talk about adoption can help honor birth parents, adoptees, and adoptive families and create a healthier understanding of adoption for everyone involved.

First, we listen.

You can tell us as much or as little about your situation as you’re comfortable sharing. You can ask questions, learn about your options, and talk with someone who understands the adoption process.

There’s no perfect way to start the conversation.

“I’m pregnant and need help.”
“I’m not sure I can parent.”
“I just want to know how adoption works.”

Any of those is enough to start.

Adoption and foster care are often talked about like they’re the same thing, but they are two different processes.

In a private infant adoption, an expectant mother can make an adoption plan for her baby, learn about waiting families, choose a family, and discuss what she hopes an ongoing relationship could look like.

Foster care involves the state and child welfare system and has a different process and purpose.

Understanding the difference matters, especially when someone is trying to make an informed decision about her pregnancy.

There isn’t one “type” of woman who considers adoption.

She may be parenting other children. She may be in school. She may have a job. She may love her baby deeply and still be questioning whether parenting is possible right now.

You can’t always see the circumstances behind someone’s decision from the outside.

That’s why our first job isn’t to assume. It’s to listen.

Every woman deserves the space to talk through her situation, ask questions, and make an informed decision for herself and her child.

Open adoption isn’t one specific type of relationship.

For one family, it might mean sharing pictures and updates. For another, it might include texts, phone calls, visits, birthdays, or time spent together throughout the year.

And those relationships can grow and change over time.

Today, most adoptions have some level of openness, with the goal of helping a child grow up knowing their story and the people who are part of it.

There isn’t one picture of what open adoption has to look like. ❤️

Finding out you’re pregnant can come with a lot of questions, especially when life doesn’t look the way you expected it to.

You don’t have to know what you want to do before reaching out to us. You don’t have to be “considering adoption.” And you definitely don’t have to have the right words.

You can simply say, “I’m pregnant, and I don’t know what to do.”
