Celebrating innovation in action!

Dr. Thomas Henry Culhane, professor and director of the Climate Mitigation and Adaptation concentration at the Patel College of Global Sustainability, has been recognized with the USF Award for Innovation in Online Design and Teaching.

His work goes beyond the classroom—transforming how sustainability is taught by making science engaging, accessible, and yes… fun.

As President Moez Limayem shared during the ceremony, it’s this kind of innovation that strengthens our entire university community.

Congratulations, Dr. Culhane, on this well-deserved recognition and for continuing to inspire the next generation of sustainability leaders. 🌍💚

A simple idea — but one with powerful impact.

Recently, The Nairobian (THE STANDARD NEWSPAPER) featured our Pay-As-You-Cook biogas model at Dunga Beach in Kisumu — a solution designed for fish traders, hotels, and small food businesses.

Instead of relying on expensive and traditional fuels, users can now access clean cooking energy and simply pay for what they use.

As our CEO Dominic Wanjihia puts it:
“It works just like airtime — you pay for what you use, and it’s much cheaper and cleaner than traditional fuels.”

This model is not just about energy — it’s about:
• Affordable access to clean cooking
• Supporting small businesses
• Reducing environmental impact
• Building a circular economy around waste

It’s encouraging to see local innovation gaining recognition and showing what practical, scalable solutions can look like.
