🦋🌱 Growth was everywhere this week at Green Bronx Machine!

Our students released butterflies into our outdoor gardens, experiencing firsthand the wonder of nature, transformation, and stewardship. Moments like these remind us that learning comes alive when students can see, touch, grow, and experience the world around them.

Meanwhile, Stephen returned from Canada after visiting six schools, connecting with hundreds of students, and delivering a TEDx Talk. 🇨🇦🎤

And tomorrow, we're headed to the District 10 STEM Fair, where we'll be showcasing technology, innovation, and hands-on learning with students from across the district.

🏗️🐜 The Green Bronx Machine KIDS! Insect of the week is… the Black Carpenter Ant! 🐜🏗️
These big, shiny ants are master construction workers! 🛠️ But here is a fun fact: Unlike termites, they don’t actually eat wood. 🏠 Instead, they hollow it out to create smooth tunnels and cozy nests! You’ll often find them busy at work in dead trees or wooden structures in your backyard.
But they aren’t always just builders—they’re also farmers! 👩‍🌾 🛡️ Somtimes they act as bodyguards for aphids, protecting them from predators. 🍯 In return, they gather the sweet "honeydew" that aphids produce to feed the whole colony. ❄️ They even collect aphid eggs and keep them safe and warm all winter long!
With incredible teamwork and determination, these ants keep their homes and food supply running smoothly. How industrious! 💪✨

Another exciting week at Green Bronx Machine! 🙌

Students continued our new culinary prep program by making fresh pico de gallo while learning about flavor, nutrition, and personal spice preferences. 🍅🌶️👩‍🍳

We also welcomed volunteers to our CS55 Community Garden where together we planted more than 5,000 seedlings, shrubs, and fruit trees 🌳✨ We can’t wait to watch everything bloom!

Meanwhile, Stephen is preparing to speak at a TEDx event in Thunder Bay, Canada 🇨🇦🌎

And thanks to YOUR generosity during our May Birthday Month campaign, we’ve already raised enough to support a classroom for an entire year. 💚 There’s still time to enter our Tower Garden Flex raffle — please share and help us continue making EPIC happen together!

This week, students explored healthy breakfasts while making no-cook banana oat bites as part of our new 10-week culinary prep program focused on nutrition, food safety, kitchen hygiene, and cultural learning. 👩‍🍳🍌✨

Meanwhile, Stephen is preparing to speak at the Longevity Conference in Milan 🇮🇹🌎

🦗🦘 The Green Bronx Machine KIDS! Insect of the week is… the Grasshopper! 🦘🦗
Check out those powerful legs! 🦵 These leapers can jump 20 times their own body length. 🚌 Imagine being able to jump over a school bus! That’s some serious hang time.
But it’s not just about the jumping—grasshoppers also have a HUGE appetite: 🦷 They love to snack on leaves, chomping away with their super-strong jaws. 🌾 You’ll find them in grassy fields and meadows, munching to their heart’s content.
They aren't picky eaters, either: 🌱 Young grasshoppers love grains and alfalfa. 🌽 Adults enjoy corn and fruit crops. 🧑‍🌾 Farmers watch out! A swarm can eat up a whole field of crops in just a few days.
Talk about a hungry hopper! 🦗✨

🌿🦟 The Green Bronx Machine KIDS! Insect of the week is… the Aphid! 🦟🌿
These little green, yellow, or pink insects are everywhere! They might be small, but they have a big appetite: 🥤 They use their straw-like mouths to slurp up sap (the juice) from plant leaves and stems!
But watch out for your veggies — they multiply fast! 📈 👯‍♀️ In warm weather, they can actually clone themselves. Because of this, their numbers grow in the blink of an eye!
It’s a wild world in the garden, and the aphid is right in the middle of the action: 🐞 Ladybugs, lacewings, and hoverflies love to munch on aphids to keep them in check. 🛡️ But some aphids have tiny bodyguards! 🐜 They release a sweet treat called honeydew that ants love. 🐄 In return, the ants protect the aphids like tiny farm animals!
Nature sure knows how to make some awesome teams! 🤝✨
