Friends of Pinellas Master Naturalists

Friends of Pinellas Master Naturalists Friends of Pinellas Master Naturalists, Inc.

is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit environmental organization supporting the mission and goals of the University of Florida/IFAS Florida Master Naturalist Program. Our story begins with the Florida Master Naturalist Program offered through the University of Florida/IFAS and taught by certified UF instructors statewide. Through an established curriculum, it promotes awareness, understanding, and respect

for Florida's natural world among Florida's citizens and visitors. In 2004, Jeanne Murphy, the lead Florida Master Naturalist Program Instructor in Pinellas County, and a group of Florida Master Naturalist Program graduates organized a Pinellas County chapter to further an important goal of the program: for graduates to “share their knowledge with others and foster principles of sustainability, connectivity, and biodiversity to assist others to understand and respect Florida's natural world as a community to which we all belong.”

In 2006, the University of Florida named our Pinellas County chapter the Chapter of the Year at the Florida Master Naturalist Program state conference. In 2006 and 2007, Jeanne Murphy received the University of Florida/IFAS Florida Master Naturalist Program Regional Instructor Award. Brian Lane, a current Board member and certified program instructor, also received the Regional Instructor Award in 2007. In 2008, chapter members voted to establish a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation to further the organization’s goals in the county, region, and ultimately, the state. Our goals, objectives, and plan of action are listed below:

Goals:

Community Outreach, Personal Growth, Socialization
Initially Pinellas County Chapter; Now Regional Presence; Soon Statewide Initiative

FPMN members rang in Cinco de Mayo with a boat tour of the Alafia Bank Bird Sanctuary to see nesting birds. Everyone had a great time! They saw young pelicans chicks, hundreds of ibis, shorebirds, and a handful of spoonbills who remained more hidden in the island's interior. Many thanks to Barb & Dave Howard of Friends of Tampa Bay Wildlife Refuges for making this outing possible! ...and to Debra Vowell for sharing her photos with us.

While we're there, we'll probably spot some river otters too--a common sight there. Check out this lovely video from Linda Wilinksi about this charismatic creature that thrives in spring-fed waters...

Their slender bodies move effortlessly through the water. Their charismatic and curious energy is highly infectious. Otters are not only fascinating to ob...

"The proposed port would threaten the health of our shared watersheds, including Tampa Bay, Terra Ceia Bay, Sarasota Bay, and beyond. Claims about economic benefits and ecological preservation obscure the real, serious harm this terminal would inflict on our waterways, our health, our businesses, and our way of life." Help protect our Tampa Bay ecosystems--sign the petition today!

A new cruise ship terminal, tentatively called the Knott-Cowen Cruise Port, has been proposed on the seaward side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, on the Knott-Cowen tract, near Terra Ceia Bay and Rattlesnake Key. The project, put forward by SSA Marine in partnership with the Tampa-based Slip Knott LL...
