Big News from AOHAB — building bridges to inclusive health in the Caribbean!

The Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders made a powerful impact at the Global Conference on Developmental Medicine & Dentistry in Jamaica — highlighting the urgent need for better oral health access for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

AOHAB leaders delivered keynotes, led clinical training, and joined global partners in signing the Caribbean Resolution 2025-01, a bold 5-pillar plan to advance policy, education, accessibility, data, and community empowerment across the region.

A meaningful step forward for global health equity — and just the beginning.

Exciting news! Check out this video from our landmark UN side‐event: “Mouth Matters: Civil Society Drives Health Through Oral Health” hosted by Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders (AOHAB) in partnership with top global leaders.

Dr. Maria Ryan Colgate, Dr. Monika Arora, and Dr. Steven P. Perlman—each underscored why oral health is integral to overall health, sharing outstanding examples and insights from their domains. A lively panel followed, featuring rich interaction among participants; Dr. Kiran Nagdeo helped organize and facilitate the discussion, with important contributions from fellow panelist Dr. Abiola Adeniyi.

Dr. Weisfuse recognized the NYU College of Dentistry NYU School of Global Public Health for their leadership in hosting the event and extended thanks to Dr. Fernando Hugo, Dr. Charles Bertolami, Dr. Kiran Nagdeo, volunteers, and global dignitaries for their contributions.

The program was moderated by Dr. Vera Tang, Clinical Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at NYU, who brought academic and professional expertise to guide the day’s discussions.

Exciting news! We’ve been hard at work on an initiative connected to our consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Together with fellow ECOSOC-accredited organizations, we’re hosting a hybrid dialogue on the role of oral health within the broader noncommunicable diseases (NCD) agenda now rising on the UN’s horizon. Our goal: raise visibility, deepen understanding of the complex drivers, and catalyze coordinated global action.

We’re especially proud that four of the event participants are AOHAB board members, one serves on our course faculty, and one is a key sponsor of our Student Leadership in Global Oral Health program—a true reflection of the leadership and support within our community.

✨ Join us (virtually or in person!) for this important conversation.

The course broadens participants’ understanding of health disparities and the needs of underserved populations, while helping to cultivate adaptability and cultural sensitivity—traits highly valued in the future dental workforce. In addition, the program offers meaningful networking opportunities and close mentorship from global leaders in oral health. Participation may also support community engagement requirements, which are increasingly valued in many U.S.-based dental training programs.

Through this nine-month course, participants engage in virtual presentations, mentorship sessions with global health experts, and networking with AOHAB alumni, culminating in a project presentation at an academic healthcare conference.

Student Leadership in Global Oral Health | Class of 2025

This year, 14 graduates from across the globe came together under the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders (AOHAB) to represent their countries at the One Voice Conference in Phoenix, USA.

After a year-long journey of webinars, mentorship sessions in office hours with top global faculty, each participant presented their research projects addressing real-world oral health challenges ranging from awareness to accessibility, equity, and innovation.

This program has not only deepened the understanding of public health but also built a vibrant, powerful multi-country network of emerging dental leaders united by one mission: improving oral health for all. Each one of them carried a story, a purpose, and a commitment to make oral health a global priority.

Today, AOHAB is proud to celebrate a growing community of 100+ graduates, each actively working to uplift oral health in their own communities — inspired, equipped, and empowered.

Exciting news from one of our incredible AOHAB student leaders!

“I’ve officially passed the national dental board exam and was humbled to receive the highest score in my university cohort—it still feels surreal!

I truly wouldn’t be here without the guidance and incredible opportunities I’ve had through the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders. Being part of the Student Leadership in Global Oral Health (SLGOH) program, the AADMD experience, and this inspiring global network has shaped me both professionally and personally.

Now that dental school is behind me, I’m excited to give back and contribute more actively to the Alliance. I’m deeply grateful for the doors AOHAB has opened—and for the mentors who believed in me from the start.”

💙 We are so proud of your achievements, Ayu Bintang Rena Sanjiwani Budhiarta, and honored to have played a part in your journey. Your passion, dedication, and heart for service inspire us all.
