The City of Sumiton Community Center and storm shelter is now open with Walker County being placed under a tornado watch , it will remain open until the storms have passed through tonight.

Sumiton Fire and Rescue Service has received numerous inquiries regarding burn permits within the city and nearby areas, questioning the status of the no burn order implemented on April 15th. To address this, the order remains in effect as per the governor's office.

Although recent rainfall may suggest otherwise, the Alabama Forestry Commission considers various factors beyond overall precipitation, including fuel moisture content, wind speed, temperature, dew point, and relative humidity. Despite the rain, ground-level fuels retain low moisture content, rendering them susceptible to ignition. We appreciate your cooperation and urge citizens to prioritize safety. The burn ban is temporary and is updated every week by the Alabama Forestry Commission.
