The last day of garbage at Pineview is Friday!
It's not even 6 a.m. and the Wednesday morning garbage business has begun as usual on no-truck, residential Bryan Road. Beelman arrives while an Atomic for Republic leaves to bring back another load of Jefferson County garbage from the Bessemer transfer station.
Semis like these pay the bill for the "free" dumps for Walker County and to make a profit for Republic. At least one more Atomic was seen leaving before this. Dumped and left this morning since the Landfill opened at 4:30, along with a Walker County front loader garbage truck.
These trucks will not be traveling Bryan Road to dump at Pineview after Friday. Pineview will close as agreed in the mediated consent decree. It was an underhanded contract the Walker County Commission made with BFI in 1990 that forced this Regional landfill here. Garbage from the transfer station BFI built with an underhanded contract with Birmigham was suppose to be brought here but it never opened. Along with a promise of access from I-22 that was never fulfilled. This landfill business that is suppose to be a massive regional landfill has stated it is losing money every month, is ready to close. Republic is set to work at Mt. Olive and John's transfer station in Bessemer like they wanted to in 2008 but lost the bid to Santek. They acquired Santek in 2019.
You see the semi tanker truck leaving, making another trip taking leachate to Ensley waterworks. Those trips run overnight and will probably continue. That's the only way to get rid of the toxic liquids that end up in the bottom of the cell. Another Atomic arrives. More trucks arriving and leaving in comments starting at 6 a.m.
Whew! That is a putrid smell coming from the landfill this morning. Let's let that end.

Saturday, June 21st is the last Saturday! Next Saturday, June 28th, 2025, these semi trucks filled will Jefferson County garbage will not be making the trip from Bessemer to Sumiton. In fact, no garbage will be brought to Bryan Road at all! Pineview is closing on June 27th!
These Atomic semi trucks from Jefferson County arriving at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21st, are making their last early Saturday morning trip to dump at Pineview Landfill on residential Bryan Road. Republic's Pineview Regional Landfill will be closed according to the mediated consent decree! Do not come to Bryan Road on or after June 28th, to dump your garbage. There will be no place to dump your garbage here!
There are usually 2 more Atomic semis that come to dump about 10 a.m., but they weren't here today! That is a move in the right direction.

After 33 years, in two weeks Republic owned and operated Pineview Regional Landfill will close. The 200 acre garbage mountain that has been built by our homes in East Walker County with garbage and waste from Jefferson County- which is the predominante tonnage, Winston County, Cullman County, Blount County, Marion County, Tuscaloosa County, Fayette County, Shelby County and Walker County will remain. No more garbage will be brought into East Walker County.
Thirty five years ago, this was an area where kids played in the woods by their houses. Now it's a garbage dump that will be monitored for 30 years as it rots so it won't pollute local streams and
explode from methane build up. The garbage mountain is tall enough that Miller Steam Plant can be seen from the top of the mountain.
June 27th, 2025, is the last day Pineview will be open.

FYI, word from folks going into Pineview. They are being told at the gate there is a truck down. The wait time to dump is at least 30 minutes.

📍The bag is on Bryan Road between the landfill and the railroad tracks.
When you have garbage bags drop from your load, you need to pick them up. You may not be required to have a tarp covering your load on the road but Republic has it posted they are required in the Pineview landfill. It should be tarped.
Republic Pineview was initially called at 9:50 and a message left on a machine.
Another call to Pineview at 10:15 alerted then to the situation as they had not listened to the message. The employee said they would see if they had someone to send out to pick it up.
It has not been picked up as of 11:50. The landfill will close at noon. Hopefully, they will have someone available at some point today to pick it up.
As of 7 p.m. it has not been picked up. It will be there on Sunday, that's a shame.

A Republic roll off seems to be broke down just outside of Walker County on 78/5. In about a month now, these trucks won't be coming into Walker County into Sumiton traveling residential
Bryan Road, AT ALL to dump at Republic owned and operated Pineview Regional Landfill. They will be dumping Jefferson County garbage in Jefferson County instead of bringing it into Walker County to dump and pay for Walker County's free dumps. Looking forward to June 28th, when after 32 years, no more garbage will be brought into East Walker County.
Also adding, Walker County rates voted on from the May 18th Commission meeting. If you have county service, you have already been paying $47 a quarter for 1 can residential pickup. You will also be paying for the new equipment the county is purchasing because their mechanic retired. Keep in mind they had already voted for a $5 increase in rates 4 years ago to buy equipment to provide employees the tools to do their job.

Friday afternoon before Memorial Day and we still have Saturday to go before the garbage stops for the weekend. This is the filth at Pineview when people cannot even make sure their garbage is dumped over the rail. Pretty sure that Republic is tired of cleaning up Walker County's mess when Walker County isn't even paying to dump. June 28th, no more garbage will be brought into East Walker County.

The garbage business day has begun on residential, no- truck Bryan Road despite the fog hasn't lifted. At least they didn't start until the school busses ran. Maybe the fog was better, when you see them you see how filthy they are. The out of county garbage being brought in on the Atomics and the red cab. Freeman logging trucks will be back and forth today from Gorgas. That's the gold one. Republic is closing their Pineview Regional Landfill per Consent Decree, June 28, 2025.

You know that's not smelling too good. Walker County Solid Waste semi truck from Jasper broke down in front of homes on no-truck, residential Bryan Road in Sumiton. Republic is closing their Pineview Regional Landfill, June 28. It's Walker County come to get their free dump with the garbage their customer's paid to be brought to Pineview. Don't worry, we will watch as Republic - who owns and operates Pineview Regional Landfill - will bring in tons more garbage from out of county to pay for your free dump.
They gonna be there awhile. That cab is only 2 years old.
Haven't we seen this somewhere before?

05/03/2025

In the Walker County Commission meeting on May 3rd, 2021, the commission voted for the county to remain in the Solid Waste business. This vote ended the discussion started months before whether to continue offering the county run garbage pickup service or to sell the service to an outside company to operate. Maintenence was a major concern, the equipment needed updated and replaced. Bids to purchase the pickup service were taken from outside companies that would end up being used to base the rate increase in this May meeting. The rates would be higher "with the county doing it." New equipment was expected to be financed and purchased. At no time was the close of Republic's Pineview Regional Landfill, June 28, 2025, brought to discussion. With Mr. Burrough's motion to vote, he considered the plans to raise rates and purchase equipment would put the "2025 issue" to rest.
Although there was discussion of Republic's bid to buy the county residential and commercial pickup services in a previous work session, the vote to continue the county service was not dependent on Republic Pineview Regional Landfill remaining open past the close date of the Consent Decree. The benefits of selling the pickup service included continuing the county employee Christmas bonus through franchise fees. The county landfill could continue and rolloff services could expand at the county's Gamble C&D landfill and offer employment for those close to retirement years.
In the May 2021 vote, Commissioners Davis and Aderholt voted to not continue the service. Previous commissions had run the department to keep rates low and break even over the last eight years because of the financial difficulties. Mr. Burrough and Mr. Borden voted to continue the pickup service, now described as the Solid Waste Department instead of only pickup. Chairman Miller broke the tie vote for Solid Waste to continue to be run by the county. The vote to finance and purchase a million dollars worth of equipment, to start, was unanimous.
At no time during the work sessions or the May 3rd vote was it ever discussed as a consideration to bring a lawsuit to keep Pineview open. Yet, in Jan. 2022, less than a year after this May vote, commissioners Burrough and Borden in a quorum meeting with Chairman Miller added an item after executive session to allow the county attorney to seek and pursue a legal way to keep Pineview open.
These are captures of the minutes from the May 3rd meeting from four years ago today. The link to the minutes is here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AFQc7Ea7k/
Other than some information about new hires, a limited amount of information provided in meetings by the commission about equipment purchases, issues such as truck wrecks and repairs and retirements, there has been very little informative provided by the commission about solid waste. Even with campaign statements that contradict the May 3rd plans, there has been no clarification of the commission member's intent. There has been no information provided about the renewal of the Gamble Solid Waste C&D landfill permit or the county's Waste Management Plan which is required by law.
